As the Washington Commanders finalize their draft board in Ashburn, here are the top 10 cornerbacks that perfectly fit Daronte Jones’ DMV defense.
ASHBURN, Va. — The next position group in our Washington Commanders big board series is cornerback, as we evaluate the traits fit of eligible players in the 2026 NFL Draft against what we believe the team is looking for under general manager Adam Peters, head coach Dan Quinn, and defensive coordinator Daronte Jones.
With Mike Sainristil, Trey Amos, Amik Robertson, and Ahkello Witherspoon already on board as players likely to land on the Commanders’ 53-man roster, there is room to add to the group.
Quick Facts: Washington Commanders 2026 Cornerback Targets
Entity | Role | 2026 Context
Treydan Stukes | CB Prospect | Arizona defender checking the most boxes for Jones’ scheme
Mansoor Delane | CB Prospect | Elite LSU prospect with top-tier mental processing
Daronte Jones | Defensive Coordinator | Seeking zone-match ability and inside/outside versatility
Adam Peters | General Manager | Finalizing the draft board 10 days out from the selection meeting
Whether it’s for their zone-match ability, quickness on the field, and in their mental processing, or due to a combination of things with the desired physical dimensions, here is how the top 10 list unfolded.
2026 WASHINGTON COMMANDERS CORNERBACK BIG BOARD
1. Treydan Stukes, Arizona
3. Jermod McCoy, Tennessee
4. Avieon Terrell, Clemson
5. D’Angelo Ponds, Indiana
7. Chris Johnson, San Diego State

The Versatile Prototype: Arizona’s Treydan Stukes tops the board with a 1.5-second 10-yard split and inside/outside versatility that perfectly suits Daronte Jones’ defensive vision.
The Elite Fit: LSU’s Mansoor Delane is a projected top-10 pick whose mental processing and coverage skills make him a premier target for Washington’s two-high shell defense.
The Post-Injury Athlete: Tennessee’s Jermod McCoy satisfies the front office’s athleticism requirement, proving his explosive upside after recovering from a 2025 torn ACL.

Quick Summary: Which cornerbacks fit the Commanders’ defense best in the 2026 NFL Draft?
The Short Answer: For the 2026 NFL Draft, Arizona’s Treydan Stukes is the top schematic fit for Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Daronte Jones. However, LSU’s Mansoor Delane and Tennessee’s Jermod McCoy also rank highly on the team’s big board as premier targets for general manager Adam Peters.

To reiterate, this is a traits-based list, meaning that while Delane is clearly the top cornerback in this group as a projected top 10 pick in this month’s draft, he falls short of some of the raw measurables that are deemed desirable as fits for Jones’ system.
Treydan Stukes offers Daronte Jones unmatched secondary versatility
Meanwhile, Stukes, who measures in at 6-foot-1, weighs around 190 lbs. With a 1.5-second 10-yard split and inside/outside versatility, along with a projection to move to safety if Jones so chooses, he checks just about every box possible.
His level of play and consistency in some of the on-tape work will drop him out of the first two rounds most likely, but the tools are there for Jones and his staff to work with, should he join the Commanders in a couple of weeks.
Mansoor Delane brings elite mental processing to a two-high shell
When looking at a traits-based list, guys like Delane, who are high in satisfying traits and high on performance measurements, become coveted players. Like Ohio State receiver Carnell Tate on our receiver big board, not only is Delane a top-10 prospect, he’s a top-three fit for Washington and the style of defense we project it to play in 2026.
His mental processing is second-to-none, and while his tape shows some points lost for long speed, his excellent 40 time at the LSU Pro Day likely helped soothe some of those concerns. Besides, if Jones unrolls a good amount of two-high safety shells, even if Delane is trailing his assignment, it won’t matter as much with a teammate over the top to keep a lid on the play.
Jermod McCoy answers physical questions following his 2025 ACL return
Athleticism is often discussed by Commanders brass, making a prospect like McCoy attractive for his upside there, along with his impact on the ball dating back to before he suffered a torn ACL in 2025. Coming back from that injury, the cornerback satisfied a lot of physical questions, and is commonly thought of as the most athletic of his group.
In the slot, compact power is the key, and something we’ve seen Sainristil bring in person and Robertson contribute on tape.
The position also requires lateral agility and the mental ability to process when to match and latch with an assignment and when to pass it off. Again, Sainristil and Robertson have extensive experience and ability in those areas, but prospects like Avieon Terrell still make our list, subject to the need Peters feels to add another player to the mix in the NFL Draft.

Adam Peters can find elite defensive value on Draft weekend
If Peters isn’t too motivated to add a slot, but does want to add to the perimeter, then Stukes returns to the conversation as a Day 2 prospect who can do both, with the versatility to help out elsewhere should Jones see the need or benefit to his system and the player’s development to do so. If he puts on good weight in the NFL, that could really help round out his ability to contribute at different spots.
Stukes has been compared by some to Philadelphia Eagles defensive back Cooper DeJean, making the slot fit make even more sense, and his high ranking on our perimeter cornerback board (No. 2 behind Delane) helped catapult him to the top overall traits fit on our board for Washington.
McCoy came in third for the perimeter group.
In the slot, coming in behind Stukes at the top was followed by Terrell at No. 2 and Indiana’s D’Angelo Ponds at No. 3.
While many of the players on this overall top 10 list will come off the board between the time the Commanders make their first selection, and the time they get back on the clock for their second, there is a good stable of talent available to help steady one of the worst secondaries in the NFL in 2025, though the improved pass rush in front of them should help with that as well.
With two boards set, we still have more to go, with everyone offering more into what we ultimately believe will happen on draft weekend, beginning just 10 days from today.
