Will Howard’s 2025 usage has been a hot topic of debate since the Steelers drafted him — but an insider recently shot down any hope for the rookie QB to start this upcoming season.

With Aaron Rodgers inadvertently holding the Steelers’ QB room hostage with his indecisiveness, Pittsburgh has very few options at signal caller — Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson, and Howard.

On Wednesday’s Steelers chat on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, insider Gerry Dulac was asked if Mike Tomlin would ever let Howard compete for the QB1 role this season — and this was his response:

“I don’t think they have any designs on letting a sixth-round rookie compete for the starting job this year. That is not the plan.”

If there are plans for Howard to eventually take the starting reins in Pittsburgh, the Steelers will likely use his rookie season to develop him under Rudolph and another veteran QB.
