New England Patriots

The New England Patriots are coming off a season in which they ended up making it all the way to the Super Bowl in Mike Vrabel’s first season as a head coach. This was the major culture shift they needed to start to turn things in the right direction going forward again.

They have their franchise quarterback solidified with Drake Maye, but they need to now figure out how to build the roster out around him better for the future to make it to the Super Bowl again.

With that, the 2026 NFL Draft is a pivotal point in this. That being said, defense is going to need to be a need, and there could be one specific position they end up making sure they address.

Why the New England Patriots Are Looking to Draft a Linebacker

Based on Eliot Wolf’s comments ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, linebacker is a major need that the Patriots plan to address. Wolf ended up saying, “I do think it’s a good position Day 3 from a depth standpoint. I think there’s a lot of players that you can justify using a Day 3 pick on.”

It is clear that linebacker was a major need as they released Jahlani Tavai and Jack Gibbens. While they still have Robert Spillane and Christian Elliss in place, they need to build the unit out better with  long-term security and depth behind them. That is what makes the third round of the draft an ideal place to land a linebacker, and one option standing out is Trey Moore.

Why Trey Moore Makes Sense for the New England Patriots

The Patriots need more speed, energy, and playmaking ability in the front seven. Even if they have some pieces already in place, this defense still feels like it could use another hybrid defender who can attack off the edge, create pressure, and give the coaching staff more versatility.

That is where Moore becomes interesting.

He is the type of defender who can line up in multiple spots and give an offense something to think about before the snap. Players like that are valuable in today’s NFL because they allow defensive coordinators to disguise pressure, move pieces around, and create favorable matchups. For a coach like Vrabel, who has always valued physical and flexible defenders, Moore feels like the kind of player who would fit naturally into that mindset.

New England is still trying to build a defense that can consistently make life difficult on opposing quarterbacks. Adding another player with pass-rush upside and linebacker flexibility would be one way to keep building that identity.

The Patriots need defenders who can help change the energy of this roster. They need more players who play fast, attack downhill, and make opposing offenses uncomfortable.

Trey Moore fits the mold of a tough, versatile defender who could give this team another front-seven weapon and help shape the identity Vrabel wants on defense. If he is there, it seems likely that Moore will be a pick for the Patriots in the draft.
