GREEN BAY (WLUK) — With the NFL Draft this week, Campbellsport native and St. Mary’s Springs’ Billy Schrauth is eager to hear his name called. Despite not being at the top of every draft board, he’s right there with the best offensive lineman in the country. While the draft can overwhelm some prospects, Billy believes it’s exactly where he’s at his best.
“I don’t shy away from these uncomfortable situations, Schrauth said. “That’s really where I feel like I start to excel. So I think just staying in the moment with things and trying to really just be myself in these meetings with coaches on these visits. I don’t got to pretend to be nobody that I am. And I think that’s the best part. I can just be me.”
That mindset was crafted after high school when Schrauth entrusted Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish to mold him into the player and person he is today.
“I wanted to go somewhere I knew I could challenge myself and I think being being around like-minded people and Notre Dame was you know a good good spot for me.,” Schrauth said. “The guys that wear the gold helmet, uh, they know, you know, it’s it’s it’s different and You know, it’s huge honor something I’ll always have a ton of gratitude for.”
And despite not seeing a single snap in 2022, Billy took advantage of his opportunity, solidifying his role on one of the top teams in the country, eventually being named team captain. And though a knee injury kept him sidelined for the back half of 2025, he knows nothing in life is handed to you on a silver platter.
“I think being the youngest in my family is It taught me a lot, you know it taught me, uh, you know nothing’s nothing’s given everything’s earned,” Schrauth said. “I always grew up playing with with older kids, you know, there was fourth grade football I was a second grader out on the field with those guys and you know, I never looked for an excuse and I always thought I was the best player on the field.”
No matter where he ends up, Billy was built for this moment and is eager to take the next step.
“I love the game to my core and just super excited for this next step and to kind of get the ball rolling here.”
