The Washington Commanders are not content with last season’s success. The good news is that quarterback Jayden Daniels operates much the same way. Instead of boasting about last season’s record-breaking season, the Commanders and Daniels were ready to work after the heartbreaking loss to the Eagles in the NFC championship game.

While everyone screamed at general manager Adam Peters to improve the defense and trade for an edge rusher, Peters stuck to his plan. Yes, Peters added to Washington’s defense this offseason, but his primary goal was to make life easier for his franchise passer.

Before free agency opened, Peters struck a deal with the 49ers for former Pro Bowl wide receiver Deebo Samuel. At the start of free agency, the Commanders shocked everyone by trading for five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil. He wasn’t done. Peters used his first-round pick on Oregon offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr. Those two moves improved three positions on Washington’s offensive line.

The Commanders’ offensive line overachieved last season, but wore down in the second half. Now, Washington can start Tunsil at left tackle, Conerly at right tackle, Tyler Biadasz at center, Brandon Coleman at left guard and Sam Cosmi at right guard once he returns. While the Commanders wait for Cosmi to return from his knee surgery, Andrew Wylie can kick inside and play right tackle.

In addition to trading for Samuel, Washington also used draft picks on wide receiver Jaylin Lane and running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt.

Speaking for the first time publicly since Washington’s offseason moves, Daniels is excited about the work Peters did.

“Those are good additions that we brought in,” Daniels said after Wednesday’s OTA in Ashburn. “Obviously, Adam, what his side of the building is doing, you have to trust him with everything that is going on. Obviously, I am excited, those are two great individuals and we got even more that they brought in. I’m excited to work with them, still progress and get ready for camp.”

Peters also brought in experienced depth for the offensive line, signing guard Nate Herbig, while adding Michael Gallup to the receiver corps.

While some on the outside will take issue with the moves Peters didn’t make, the moves he did make were with his quarterback in mind.
