Tampa Bay Buccaneers General Manager Jason Licht recently provided a cryptic update regarding the future of quarterback Baker Mayfield, whose contract remains a primary focus for the franchise’s upcoming plans.
After missing the playoffs in the 2025-26 season, the front office aims to maintain roster continuity, with Mayfield entering the final year of his contract.
Licht emphasized that all team decisions revolve around the veteran quarterback and noted that the two frequently communicated during the draft, saying, “Nobody here wants Baker playing for every other team.”
According to NBC Sports, Licht’s draft strategy was also heavily influenced by high-stakes drama involving the Las Vegas Raiders.
He expressed gratitude toward the Raiders and their front office, specifically mentioning his close relationship with Tom Spytek, after a rumored trade between the Raiders and Ravens involving Maxx Crosby did not materialize.
Licht admitted he felt nervous while the Raiders occupied a draft slot directly in front of Tampa Bay and noted that Spytek “taunted” him by teasing that he knew exactly what the Buccaneers needed.
However, the collapse of that trade ultimately worked in Tampa Bay’s favor, as it allowed the board to fall in their direction, aided by the Raiders’ other personnel moves.
This sequence helped the Buccaneers secure Rueben, prompting Licht to humorously thank his colleagues for the indirect assistance.
This roster stability is fueling optimism for breakout rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, who believes the offense is poised to become “dangerous” under new coordinator Zac Robinson.
Robinson, a disciple of the Sean McVay coaching tree, replaces Josh Grizzard after just one year.
Egbuka expressed excitement about the shift in philosophy, noting that Robinson’s track record of utilizing elite playmakers in Atlanta suggests that Tampa Bay’s diverse talent pool will be fully unlocked in the 2026 season.
