NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Take One: Shough’s arm talent on full display
Saints quarterback Tyler Shough displayed the traits that attracted him to the Saints in the draft. The rookie’s arm talent was on full display very early in the Saints latest OTA practice.
Shough opened 7-on-7 with a 60-yard bomb to Bub Means for a touchdown. He did it again later in practice with a 60+ yard connection to Donovan Peoples-Jones. On both throws, Shough showed the effortless flick of the wrist to get the ball downfield. He also hit Mason Tipton on deep out on the sideline and threaded a beauty to Jack Stoll for a big gain on a corner route.
His best throw, however, may have been in his first incompletion of practice when he rolled to his left and threw off platform to Cedrick WIlson, who broke off his route and headed upfield. Wilson wasnt able to come down with it, as it was almost like he didnt think the ball initially had a chance.
On the flipside, Shough’s final pass was picked off by Rezjohn Wright over the middle of the field.
Shough finished his day 9/12 with two touchdowns and an interception. In the practices we’ve seen, Shough has shown real comfort with vertical and out-breaking routes. He’s not quite as comfortable working the intermediate (11-20 yards downfield) between the seams.
Take Two: Spencer stays steady
Spencer Rattler didn’t quite have the ‘wow’ plays that Shough did, but he did have a good day overall.
Rattler finished 10/12 on the day and worked the intermediate part of the field very well. His best passes came on a deep comeback throw to Chris Olave for 15, an over route to Juwan Johnson for about 25 yards and a deep dig over to Rashid Shaheed for at least 20 yards.
Rattler closed out his day with a deep ball to Shaheed on a go-route. Shaheed had a step, but the ball was slightly underthrown which allowed rookie Dalys Beanum to knock the ball away at the last second.
Take Three: Increased workload
Overall, this has been a very light workload during this OTA period. On Thursday, Kellen Moore added another round of 7-on-7. Last week both quarterbacks threw eight passes a piece. This week, they each threw 12.
The other big change was both Rattler and Shough split reps with the first team at quarterback. Last week, Rattler took all the reps.
The team once again did one walkthrough 11-on-11 period.
Take Four: Attendance report
Chase Young was back to work after missing last Thursday’s practice and looks good physically. He batted down a Rattler pass during the walkthrough.
Alvin Kamara, Taysom Hill, Bryan Bresee, Cam Jordan, Nathan Shepherd, J.T. Gray, Tyrann Mathieu, DeMario Davis and Davon Godchaux were not present.
Jake Haener, Foster Moreau, Dallin Holker and Quincy Riley were all there but did not participate as they recover from injuries.
Take Five: Other Observations
The Saints first team offensive line remained unchanged with Kelvin Banks, Trevor Penning, Erik McCoy, Cesar Ruiz and Taliese Fuaga as the starting five. The team went paintballing Wednesday as a team bonding event. Kellen Moore participated and said everyone kept to work Thursday with a few bruises. Shaheed led all receivers with three receptions.7-on-7 is generally slanted towards the offense with no pass rush available. But even with that advantage, the Saints defenders have struggled a bit in coverage during the two practices we’ve seen.
