Most NFL teams are notoriously tight when it comes to spending. Even when players have earned a significant pay raise, owners tend not to just hand out money unless they absolutely have to.
But there are exceptions to the rule, and the Carolina Panthers made one for wide receiver Jalen Coker.
The reigning NFC South champs have rewarded the former undrafted free agent with a three-year, $34 million contract extension. When added to his existing year, Coker’s pact now spans over four years—with a base salary of $35 million and $6 million in incentives.
To be sure, the Panthers did not do this out of the goodness of their hearts. The only reason players get more than a bare-bottom deal as a pending restricted free agent is because the team is expecting much more from them in the future—and that’s definitely the case with Coker and Carolina.
Over his first two years in the NFL, Coker has totaled 65 catches, 872 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 22 games. That’s certainly enough to deserve more than your average undrafted free agent.

The Panthers’ front office wouldn’t have dealt out this extension if they projected a small role for Coker in the offense. Clearly, head coach Dave Canales and offensive coordinator Brad Idzik have bigger plans for Coker, whose 43 targets ranked fourth on the team in 2025.
Coker’s quad injuries have played a part in keeping a lid on his performance, but this new agreement signals that the Panthers plan to have him fill the No. 2 spot behind Tetairoa McMillan. His annual salary now dwarfs that of Xavier Legette, John Metchie III and Chris Brazzell II.
With a notable lack of pass-catching options at tight end and running back, Coker is clear for takeoff to an unchallenged position as quarterback Bryce Young’s second option in the passing game.
