June 1 does not hold the same significance as it once did in the NFL, but it remains an important date for teams and players regarding contract structure.
Across the league, many contracts are structured to provide teams with financial flexibility when making roster decisions, with some players becoming more expendable after that date. While the Tennessee Titans are unlikely to make a move specifically for salary cap purposes, that does not mean that every veteran is safe.
This date also marks the beginning of the final wave of free agency, when new players hit the market or become available via trade with moves that can financially benefit teams.
Tennessee could use this time to fortify its roster with some new faces, or they could potentially deal a veteran who could face an uphill climb to make the 53-man roster out of training camp.
Cody Benjamin of NFL Media believes that is where the Titans will be, dealing away one of their veteran quarterbacks.
Will Levis – Tennessee Titans
The Tennessee Titans aren’t rushing to move on from the former second-round pick, at least publicly, but ever since the club’s new regime spent this year’s No. 1 overall pick on Cam Ward, the writing has been on the wall. Could coach Brian Callahan retain the big-armed youngster as Ward’s backup? Perhaps. But the Titans could save $1.6 million by trading Levis after June 1, whereas a trade or release prior to June 1 would’ve only saved the franchise about $600,000.
Potential landing spots: Buccaneers, Lions, RamsPrediction: Traded to Buccaneers
Seeing Levis on this list makes perfect sense after the team spent the first overall selection in the 2025 NFL draft on Cam Ward. Tennessee has said that he will be competing for the starting position, but from the activities and soundbites coming out of OTAs, it appears that even Levis understands that his chances to unseat Ward are slim.
With veterans Brandon Allen and Tim Boyle both on the roster, Levis is expendable. However, the competition he brings to the field could help in Cam Ward’s development leading into the season, making this an interesting situation to monitor moving forward.
