NEW ORLEANS —
New Orleans Saints receiver Chris Olave could have simply held out during all the offseason workouts and the start of training camp, but he did not.
Olave’s reward is becoming the sixth highest paid receiver in the NFL and has the largest contract for a receiver in Saints history.
After just doing individual drills the first two days of training camp, Olave did all drills at the third training camp practice Friday morning.
“I didn’t really want to create no negative or anything surrounding me or the organization, like I said, I’m a team first guy, I want to like I said, just keep building momentum going into the year and keep building that confidence within the team, just showing facey, really try to be a leader going into my fifth year,” Olave said.
A leader for rookie receiver Jordyn Tyson, who’s starting to build a good connection with Olave so he can learn more about the NFL game.
“Chris is a real quiet guy, but when he says something, it’s the truth. It’s the hundred percent truth and it’s real. I’m definitely just, like I said asking questions picking his mind. He’s probably going to get tired of me but I’m getting better,” Tyson said.
Olave is just not trying to overwhelm Tyson right now.
“I’m just not trying to give him too much advice. I mean, he’s here for a reason. Just trying to give him those advantages off the field, like, the chef and all that type of stuff, training room, all the little things that we could gain advantage in and, get ahead of other guys in the league.”
Get ahead and stay ahead.
Remember, Tyson is making up some ground after being held back during OTAs and minicamp.
But after a few practices under his belt, he knows what he needs to work on.
“Just play with more speed. Just reading option routes out better is a big one but, yeah, I haven’t got too much plays in, I’m still kind of in the ramp up process.”
One of those plays is his first touchdown connection with Tyler Shough on day two, where Tyson kind of called his shot before practice.
“We actually had our walkthrough in here right before practice and Tyler came over and he was like someone scored a touchdown, let’s go celebrate. I just happen to be the one that scored the touchdown. So yeah, it was really cool, all the o-linemen came up to me. We had a little jump, yeah it was cool.”
Tyson celebrated the touchdown and took accountability for the interception Shough threw on day two.
“I broke out and I saw there was a defender out. I tried to reverse back in; you can’t do that. especially when you got pressure. He has to get the ball out. So, that was definitely on me.”
Tyson hired a private chef to help take care of his body even more, and says the chef will start next week.
