The Eagles are trending toward having their projected top three wide receivers available when they open the regular season against the Washington Commanders. DeVonta Smith and first-round pick Makai Lemon were full participants in Monday’s practice, joining Dontayvion Wicks in team drills with Philadelphia’s starting offense. It was the first time since Aug. 3 that Smith and Lemon were both full participants.
Smith and Lemon have dealt with hamstring injuries throughout training camp. Smith missed several consecutive practices before returning in a limited capacity during Philadelphia’s joint practices with New England. Lemon’s recovery required additional patience. The rookie initially injured the hamstring during the spring before aggravating it during training camp. He returned to individual drills last week and progressed to full-team work Monday. Philadelphia used Smith, Wicks and Lemon together in 11-personnel formations, providing an early look at the group expected to handle the majority of the receiving responsibilities in Sean Mannion’s offense.
Smith remains Jalen Hurts’ top wide receiver, while Wicks has used his familiarity with Mannion’s system to establish himself as a likely starter. Lemon is expected to work primarily from the slot while also moving throughout the formation. The Eagles are expected to rest all three receivers during Friday’s preseason finale against the Cincinnati Bengals. That will leave practices as their primary opportunity to develop timing with Hurts before Week 1.
Philadelphia opens the regular season against Washington on Sept. 13 at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles still have nearly three weeks to prepare, giving Smith and Lemon time to regain conditioning and build chemistry within the offense.
Barring another setback, Hurts should have his projected starting receiver group available for the opener.
