The Chiefs out together an impressive win against the broncos on MNF. I can’t stress enough that it is only one game. These can change quickly. That said, let’s see how many of my concerns were assuaged , at least temporarily.

Kelce’s age catching up to him

I was afraid that Father Time was coming after Travis Kelce. He’s 38 (or soon to be) and not many players can stay healthy, let alone still be effective at that age.

Verdict – Less concerned

Trav’s legs looked pretty spry on that 60 yard catch and run. He looked at least as fast as he did last year. Not a bad outing for Old Man River

The Secondary

I felt the depth was solid, however, I had questions about Snead and Fulton and their injury history. We also had several young players that were unproven. How would they stack up against the better passing offenses in the NFL?

Verdict – less concerned

Delaine made a big play out of the gate. I thought Snead and Fulton played well and Williams looked great. They didn’t even need Canaday out there despite the injury to Delaine. This unit suffocated Denver’s passing game. If these guys can stay healthy and Spags can manage the load of Fulton and Snead, this could be a nasty group.

The Run game

I was skeptical that Andy would stay committed to running the ball in spite of paying Ken Walker all that money. P was also worried we were going to get a steady dose of RPO’s

Verdict – less concerned

KC ran the ball all over Denver. I think even Vance Joseph was god smacked that Andy ran the ball that many times. There also were more runs under center and more creative run designs. Walker was a major force in that game

Special Teams

I feared more out of Dave Toub’s units that we saw last year. Penalties, no return game, Butker struggling. That was a major sore spot on the team last year.

Verdict – Still concerned

Same old, same old. special teams had 4 penalties on the day including one that led to and INT by Mahomes. The return game got nothin and Butker almost missed a P.A.T. Special teams continues to be an issue on this team.

The WR room

I thought this group lacked elite talent. I questioned if they could be a major factor in the offense. I just didn’t see it with this group.

Verdict – Still concerned

The Chiefs wr’s combined for 5 catches for 39 yards and a TD on 10 targets. Not exactly domination. I am hopeful that with mahomes getting healthier and Rice and Worthy knocking the rust off that they can do better than that.. That said, that was a pretty uninspiring performance.

The pass rush.

The Chiefs really struggled to get to the QB in 25. They added several pieces to the DL in the off season. Would it be enough to elevate the team past mediocrity?

Verdict – less concerned

The DL got consistent pressure on one of the best OL’s in the league. More importantly, they did it (in large part) with 4 guys. If they can continue to pressure like that with 4 guys , that is a game changer. Hard not to like what we saw from that unit.

Offensive Line

With Josh Simmons out for who knows how long, KC was already going into the season under manned at one of the most important positions in football. The thought of a rookie UDFA starting against the vaunted Denver pass rush was enough to keep fans up at night . It was the biggest story of this team going into week one.

Verdict – Less concerned

Benson looked better than anyone could have expected. He took Nick Benito out of the game. Benito was visibly frustrated , slamming his helmet on the sideline. Word of caution, Benson now has tape out there. Kingsley looked pretty good in his first start at LT. We all saw how that played out. That said, good performance by the rookie.

Andy Reid losing his fastball.

The Chiefs haven’t had an elite offense for years now. Is Andy losing his ability to adapt? Was he losing the ability to adjust? Was he not as creative as he once was? At 68 years old, it is fair to ask those questions coming off the year the chiefs had.

Verdict – less concerned

That was as an exciting of a Chiefs offense I have seen in quite some time. Cool running formations, more plays under center, counter runs. When was the last time you saw a real counter run with this team? They also did some razzle dazzle at the goaline. Andy came up with a great gameplan and stuck with it. Good stuff.

Patrick Mahomes injury.

I think everyone had some concern of how Mahomes was going to look post ACL surgery. He moved mountains to ge ready for the regular season, but how rusty would he be and how long would it take for him to get back to what he was?

Verdict – still concerned

Pat started 2 -14 and looked awful. He settled in to more of a game manager role in the second half. It was nice seeing other guys step up and make plays for a change. The offense wasn’t all on his shoulders like it usually is. Still, Pat has to play better than that. You can’t win week in and week out with a QB who has 16 air yards. Hopefully , he will continue to more comfortable with his knee going forward.

Overall team depth

The Chiefs roster was seemingly thin at several key spots. It is safe to wonder how they would hold up under any injuries

Verdict- slightly less concerned.

The Chiefs went into MNF down their starting LT and a starting safety. The lost the 6th overall pick 3 snaps into the game. They still crushed Denver. they showed that they have some depth, at least in some key areas. I just don’t want that depth tested any more throughout the season.

*New Concern. Creed Humphrey’s snapping.

Bowling ball snapping by Creed Humphrey reared its ugly head again in this game. I hope to god this was a one off. That is the last thing we need.

Conclusion

It is only one game and all of this can change when we play the Colts. That said, the team alliviated (for now) several of my key concerns going into the season. I will revisit this after the bye week to see where we stand.

[2063
6190,346,7,118,110,922,2438,2437,6
post-1004068","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-kansas-city-chiefs","tag-arrowheadlines","tag-chiefs","tag-football","tag-kansas-city","tag-kansas-city-chiefs","tag-kansas-city-chiefs-news","tag-kansascity","tag-kansascitychiefs","tag-nfl
["GET
