{"id":1004674,"date":"2026-09-19T03:03:38","date_gmt":"2026-09-19T03:03:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/1004674\/"},"modified":"2026-09-19T03:03:38","modified_gmt":"2026-09-19T03:03:38","slug":"jets-make-kicker-decision-after-jason-sanders-up-and-down-week-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/1004674\/","title":{"rendered":"Jets make kicker decision after Jason Sanders&#8217; up-and-down Week 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jason Sanders will kick for the Jets again Sunday against Green Bay.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Aaron Glenn made the announcement Friday after Sanders \u2014 who had an ugly training camp \u2014 performed well in the opening-week win over the Titans, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/09\/13\/sports\/jason-sanders-might-be-solution-to-jets-kicking-woes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with a pair of field goals from more than 50 yards<\/a> after missing badly from 54 yards early in the game.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSanders will be the kicker,\u2019\u2019 Glenn said. \u201cI thought it was critical to see him go through that miss and then be able to come back and make two 50-something yarders, which I thought was impressive.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sanders\u2019 role was in question after his unsteady performance over the summer, which helped lead the Jets to claim Blake Grupe off waivers before the opener.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" decoding=\"async\"   data-modal-image=\"40891282\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/GettyImages-2290532149.jpg\" alt=\"Jason Sanders kicks a field goal against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at MetLife Stadium on August 14, 2026 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. \" class=\"wp-image-40891282\"\/>Jason Sanders kicks a field goal against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at MetLife Stadium on August 14, 2026 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.  Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>But after he didn\u2019t come close on the 54-yarder, Sanders recovered against Tennessee, with the two long field goals in his first regular-season game since 2024, when he was with Miami.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time you miss, when you come back and hit those, it\u2019s definitely a nice little boost to your confidence,\u2019\u2019 Sanders said. \u201cObviously, you don\u2019t want to miss them, but I felt good.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Glenn praised Sanders\u2019 ability to overcome his poor camp and his first long kick of the season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at our team in general, including myself, we have a team of men that has [gone] through some things, that have fought through some adversity,\u2019\u2019 Glenn said. \u201cI\u2019m attracted to people like that, because it\u2019s not just the physical toughness, but the mental toughness that shows up.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"   data-modal-image=\"40891283\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/GettyImages-2295086605.jpg\" alt=\"Jason Sanders kicks a field goal against the Tennessee Titans during the second quarter of the game at Nissan Stadium on September 13, 2026 in Nashville, Tennessee. \" class=\"wp-image-40891283\"\/>Jason Sanders kicks a field goal against the Tennessee Titans during the second quarter of the game at Nissan Stadium on September 13, 2026 in Nashville, Tennessee.  Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what Glenn saw from Sanders on Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did a good job and I like the way he fought back and ended up making those field goals,\u2019\u2019 Glenn said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And it was good enough to give him another week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s like anytime there\u2019s competition,\u2019\u2019 said Sanders, who was signed and cut by the Giants earlier in the offseason. \u201cIt\u2019s a good thing, no matter what position it is. \u2026 Nothing\u2019s ever given, right? And everything\u2019s earned.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rookie cornerback D\u2019Angelo Ponds is expected to make his debut against the Packers after <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/09\/08\/sports\/dangelo-ponds-kenyon-sadiq-healthy-now-looking-to-make-impact\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">missing much of camp<\/a> with a calf injury.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Asked if Ponds was \u201c100 percent\u201d healthy, Glenn said, \u201cI don\u2019t think anybody\u2019s 100 percent, but he\u2019s ready to go.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The real test is when the second-round pick (50th overall) out of Indiana gets on the field against Green Bay.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Glenn said Ponds, since recovering from the injury, has looked good in practice and \u201cunderstands exactly what he\u2019s doing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, that\u2019s not the same as facing Jordan Love and Co. in a real game.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGet the insider\u2019s view on Gang Green\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSign up for Inside the Jets by Brian Costello, a weekly Sports+ exclusive.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThank you\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just actually doing it,\u2019\u2019 Glenn said. \u201cWe\u2019ll see how this week goes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Will McDonald (ankle), a surprising addition to Thursday\u2019s injury report, was listed as questionable Friday and is expected to play Sunday, according to Glenn.
