While the 49ers don’t seem inclined to trade backup quarterback Mac Jones<\/a>, that won’t stop desperate teams from calling general manager John Lynch.<\/p>\n

The New York Giants, in the wake of Jaxson Dart’s season-ending knee injury, could look to acquire a veteran quarterback, and Jones is on the list of signal-callers<\/a> they could be interested in, ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported Sunday, citing sources.<\/p>\n

In addition to Jones, the Giants also could consider former 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, Arizona Cardinals backup Garner Menshew, Minnesota Vikings backup J.J. McCarthy and Kansas City Chiefs backup Justin Fields, per Schefter, Rapoport and Garafolo.<\/p>\n

For now, the Giants will turn to veteran Jameis Winston, but if he struggles against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, New York could look to upgrade the position.<\/p>\n

Lynch was reluctant to trade Jones this offseason<\/a>, and he reiterated that stance during Thursday’s appearance on KNBR.<\/p>\n

“I got to leave that alone,” Lynch told KNBR’s Brian Murphy and Markus Boucher. “What I will tell you is, I think a lot of people see all that and say, OK, there’s opportunity. It also tells you we’re very fortunate to have a guy like Brock [Purdy], franchise quarterback, but then to have a guy like Mac in the event [of Purdy getting injured]. There’s no more important position in football — they’re all important — but I think we know as your quarterback goes, so goes your team. So, I think it’s a really special situation to have Brock here and to have Mac here. And to have a guy we’re really excited about with Kurtis Rourke.<\/p>\n

“I think back to [former 49ers coach] Bill Walsh; maybe he was on to something when he had Joe Montana but he also brought Steve Young in here. It’s a good position to be in, a position of strength, and it provides opportunities in a number of ways, the most important way being that you’re well insulated in the event something ever were to happen. And then there also are opportunities you receive calls and then you make decisions accordingly. But we love our situation at quarterback.”<\/p>\n

When a toe injury knocked 49ers starting quarterback Brock Purdy out for an extended period last season, Jones stepped in and guided San Francisco to a 5-3 record while completing 69.6 percent of his pass attempts for 2,151 yards and 13 touchdowns with six interceptions.<\/p>\n

So, while it remains unlikely that the 49ers will trade Jones, if the Giants make an offer Lynch can’t refuse, the veteran quarterback could be headed to the Big Apple.<\/p>\n
