{"id":1014572,"date":"2026-09-30T06:42:24","date_gmt":"2026-09-30T06:42:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/1014572\/"},"modified":"2026-09-30T06:42:24","modified_gmt":"2026-09-30T06:42:24","slug":"jets-make-kicker-decision-by-signing-jason-sanders-waiving-blake-grupe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/1014572\/","title":{"rendered":"Jets make kicker decision by signing Jason Sanders, waiving Blake Grupe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If they hadn\u2019t already been answered, any questions about the Jets kicking situation were put to rest Tuesday when the team signed Jason Sanders to the active roster and waived Blake Grupe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sanders had been <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/09\/13\/sports\/jason-sanders-might-be-solution-to-jets-kicking-woes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">elevated from the practice squad<\/a> in each of the first three weeks and is 5-for-6 on field goal tries this season, with his only miss <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/09\/18\/sports\/jets-make-kicker-decision-after-jason-sanders-up-and-down-week-1\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a 54-yarder in the season opener<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By NFL rule, a player can be elevated from the practice squad a maximum of three times per season before a team must either sign him to the active 53-man roster or expose him to waivers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sanders\u2019 elevation for Sunday\u2019s game in Detroit was his third, which exhausted his maximum allotment of practice squad elevations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sanders failed to make the initial 53-man roster after a shaky preseason, leading the Jets <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/31\/sports\/jets-claim-blake-grupe-to-be-new-kicker-after-ugly-competition\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to sign Grupe<\/a> the week before the season opener. <\/p>\n<p>Sanders was selected to play the opener and hasn\u2019t relinquished the job since.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In other roster moves Tuesday, the Jets waived cornerback Jordan Clark, though he could return to the practice squad if he clears waivers. <\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"   data-modal-image=\"41051639\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/new-york-jets-kicker-jason-142782757.jpg\" alt=\"New York Jets kicker Jason Sanders (19) kicks a field goal against the Detroit Lions.\" class=\"wp-image-41051639\"\/>New York Jets kicker Jason Sanders (19) kicks a field goal against the Detroit Lions during the third quarter at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan, Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026.
