NEW ORLEANS \u2014<\/p>\n
Twenty years ago, the New Orleans Saints returned to the Superdome to face archrivals, the Atlanta Falcons, in a newly reopened stadium following the devastation from Hurricane Katrina.<\/p>\n
On Sept. 25, 2006, WDSU was on the air for the entire day, marking the historic moment fans were welcomed back to cheer on the Saints. <\/p>\n
WDSU Chief Meteorologist Emeritus Margaret Orr said the New Orleans Saints gave New Orleans something to hold onto in the dark days following Hurricane Katrina. <\/p>\n
“The cheering was so loud, I thought we were going to break the roof to the Superdome again. In fact, I thought we’d break the sound barrier,” Orr said. <\/p>\n
She described how the Saints win against the Falcons was not just a win for the team, but a win for the city. <\/p>\n
“It gave us hope. It gave us hope that we could get through this terrible time,” Orr said. “The next day we had to go back to mucking our houses, dealing with insurance or working to bring our families home. But we did it with joy in our hearts. Because of that win, it ignited our spirits and helped us get through those truly dark days. <\/p>\n
Orr said the Saints won, but the city won too. <\/p>\n
