Nearly every week of the NFL season has brought another uncomfortable moment between Cam Ward and Tennessee Titans media.

Most recently, the second-year quarterback went viral for appearing to be impatient with reporters during his mandatory post-game press conference. In multiple instances, reporters have aggressively held Ward’s feet to the fire regarding his on-field performance, despite the apparent weaknesses across the roster for the 0-4 Titans.

The press conference tensions may seem like an inevitable byproduct of such a bad team, but Bomani Jones believes there’s more to the story. In multiple recent episodes of his podcast, The Right Time, Jones argued that he has never seen such an ugly dynamic between a highly regarded young QB and local media — and wondered whether management is behind it.

“You only have a media go that hard at the quarterback, let alone the young quarterback, on a team that nobody expects to be good, with the consent of either coaching or management,” he said Monday. “I don’t know what they are telling people about him, but I don’t know how that turns around.”

Ward has a career QBR under 50, and Tennessee is 3-17 in games he has started. Still, the team fired its head coach after his rookie season and has largely been adrift since Mike Vrabel left after the 2023 season.

Jones pointed to situations like Bryce Young in Carolina and Sam Darnold as examples of why teams should have more patience with top picks, versus how quickly Titans media has turned on Ward. Jones also noted that the Titans appear to have far bigger issues than their young quarterback.

“Somebody’s telling these guys this is OK. And it’s interesting, because they have an obvious ownership problem with that team,” he said.

“This team doesn’t look good, the organization doesn’t seem to be strong, people around them have been complaining about Amy Struck for as long as I can think of, since she got there. The quarterback may be the reflection of an issue, but their issues are grand, and they are giant, and it all seems that right now, the face of it is their 20-something-year-old quarterback.”
