Girls flag football is officially underway in Beaufort County, with six high schools taking part in the county’s inaugural girls high school flag football league.

The Carolina Panthers helped kick off the new pilot program Wednesday at May River High School, where teams from Battery Creek, Beaufort, Bluffton, Hilton Head, May River and Whale Branch were introduced.

The Panthers also presented Beaufort County School District with a $15,000 grant through Carolina Panthers Charities to help support the league. The funds going toward equipment kits for each school, including footballs and flags, along with uniform grants.

Riley Fields, the Panthers’ director of community relations, said the organization is excited to see the sport continue to grow in the Lowcountry.

“Our real goal is that in the not-too-distant future, that the sport will become a sanctioned high school sport in the state, and girls will not only have the opportunity to play, but to play for state championships. And really, it’s about giving access and opportunities to the girls to compete in the sport.” Fields said.

The Panthers say girls high school flag football has grown rapidly across the Carolinas. Since 2022, the sport has expanded from a North Carolina pilot involving 19 high schools and roughly 500 athletes to more than 250 participating high schools and more than 4,000 athletes across North Carolina and South Carolina.

Fields said roughly 80 schools in South Carolina are currently competing in similar pilot programs.

Flag football is also scheduled to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

For the six Beaufort County schools taking part this season, Wednesday marked the beginning of a new opportunity for local athletes, and potentially the start of something much bigger for girls’ flag football in the state.

BLUFFTON, S.C. — Girls flag football is officially underway in Beaufort County, with six high schools taking part…

[2075
10892,133372,133373,133369,133371,133374,235,260,124698,2567,7,28656,6791,6249,5538,133379,133375,1014,11680,133376,133370,6,133381,114358,2610,236,2427,133380,133378,1686,817,376,92181,133377
post-1021703","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-carolina-panthers","tag-athlete","tag-battery-creek","tag-beaufort","tag-beaufort-county","tag-beaufort-county-school-district","tag-bluffton","tag-carolina","tag-carolina-panthers","tag-carolina-panthers-charities","tag-carolinapanthers","tag-football","tag-girl-flag-football","tag-girls-flag-football","tag-grant","tag-high-school","tag-high-school-sport","tag-hilton-head","tag-los-angeles","tag-lowcountry","tag-may-river","tag-may-river-high-school","tag-nfl","tag-north-carolina-pilot","tag-olympic-debut","tag-opportunity","tag-panthers","tag-part","tag-pilot-program","tag-riley-fields","tag-south-carolina","tag-sport","tag-state","tag-state-championships","tag-whale-branch
["GET
