Sheridan scored three straight fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull away from Benton and beat the Panthers 59-49 on Friday night at Yellowjacket Stadium, keeping the Yellowjackets unbeaten at 6-0 and dropping Benton to 3-3.<\/p>\n
The win snapped a losing streak for Sheridan in one of the state\u2019s longest-running rivalries. Benton beat the Yellowjackets 87-42 last season and led the series 29-9 entering Friday\u2019s game. The teams first met in 1930, when Benton won 25-0.<\/p>\n
Sheridan scored on its opening drive when Zay Stephens ran outside for a 23-yard touchdown less than a minute into the game. The Yellowjackets\u2019 two-point pass fell incomplete, leaving them up 6-0.<\/p>\n
Benton answered when A.P. Lewis scored on a sweep in the red zone, and the extra point gave the Panthers a 7-6 lead. After the Benton defense forced a turnover on downs, Lamarion Bradley scored on a handoff near the goal line to put the Panthers up 14-6.<\/p>\n
Sheridan drove the length of the field on its next possession, and Stephens scored again on a 3-yard run. Benton stopped the two-point try, and the Panthers led 14-12 after the first quarter.<\/p>\n
After forcing a Benton three-and-out, Sheridan regained the lead early in the second quarter on a touchdown pass of about 28 yards to a wide-open receiver. A quarterback keeper on the two-point conversion made it 20-14.<\/p>\n
Benton went 64 yards in six plays and 2:05 on its next drive, capped by a 25-yard touchdown pass from Chase Cobb to Lewis, who broke several tackles on his way to the end zone. The extra point put the Panthers up 21-20.<\/p>\n
The Yellowjackets responded with a touchdown pass in the red zone, but Benton stopped another two-point attempt, leaving Sheridan ahead 26-21 with two minutes left in the half. Cobb then led the Panthers into Sheridan territory and found Lewis for a 46-yard touchdown with less than a minute remaining, sending Benton into halftime with a 28-26 lead.<\/p>\n
Benton had 154 rushing yards and 91 passing yards at the break, while Sheridan had 118 rushing yards and 213 passing yards.<\/p>\n
Bradley ran up the middle for a touchdown on first-and-goal early in the third quarter, putting Benton up 35-26 with 8:31 left in the period. Sheridan answered with a 51-yard touchdown pass on which the Yellowjackets\u2019 quarterback appeared to cross the line of scrimmage before throwing to an open receiver. No penalty was called, and a two-point conversion pulled Sheridan within 35-34.<\/p>\n
Benton\u2019s next drive ended when Cobb fumbled while scrambling and Sheridan recovered. On third-and-16, the Yellowjackets connected with Dylan Smith for a 30-yard touchdown to take a 40-35 lead.<\/p>\n
Cobb pushed into the end zone on a quarterback sneak on third-and-1 from the 2-yard line, and the extra point gave Benton a 42-40 lead with 11:55 remaining.<\/p>\n
Sheridan then took control. The Yellowjackets drove the field and scored on fourth-and-6 with a touchdown pass of more than 40 yards, going ahead 46-42 with 9:04 left. Sheridan kicked deep on the ensuing kickoff and recovered the ball at the Benton 4-yard line when no Panthers player was back to field it. A tight end reverse on first-and-goal made it 52-42 with 8:59 left.<\/p>\n
Cobb threw an interception on Benton\u2019s next possession, and with less than five minutes remaining, Sheridan scored on a back-shoulder touchdown pass of more than 20 yards to go up 59-42.<\/p>\n
Benton drove 95 yards on its final possession, and Cobb scored on a 12-yard scramble on third-and-10 with 13 seconds left to set the final score.<\/p>\n
Cobb completed 31 of 43 passes for 259 yards with two touchdowns and one interception and added two rushing touchdowns. Bradley ran 22 times for 203 yards and two touchdowns. Lewis rushed for 11 yards and a touchdown and caught nine passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns, averaging nearly 20 yards per catch.<\/p>\n
Benton was penalized 10 times for 105 yards. Sheridan converted 13 of 17 third downs, while Benton converted 7 of 12.<\/p>\n
