Nevertheless, last Sunday’s failure to beat the Giants strained my ability to keep a positive outlook, even more than the previous week’s loss to the Colts.

The reason for that was the team’s sheer determination to avoid winning, despite multiple advantages working in their favor and opportunities left on the field.

The failure of clock management in the final series of the game has been discussed at length, so there is no need to re-litigate that here. However, even prior to the Commanders possessing the ball on the Giants’ 24 yd line, with 12 sec remaining in overtime, the franchise was working hard to find ways to deny itself the victory.

In the two games prior to Sunday’s embarrassing 27-27 overtime tie with the Giants, the Commanders’ run blocking collapsed, leaving them unable to establish a running game with lead back Bill Croskey-Merritt. Against the Giants, the run blocking was much improved – not just due to the return of Sam Cosmi to the line-up, but across the board. In the first half, Bill rushed for 51 yds and a TD, averaging 7.3 Y/A. For some reason, the Commanders turned away from the run in the second half and overtime, giving Bill just 4 touches in 3 quarters of football, and none in overtime – even as he increased his average 7.8 Y/A in the second half.

The mid-game adjustments on defense mirrored those on offense. Warren Sharp of Sharp Analytics has pointed out how the Commanders switched coverage from a scheme which was working in the first half, and allowed Jameis Winston to lead a comeback:

For what seems like an eternity, Washington fans have been wishing for a coaching staff with the ability to make adjustments when game plans aren’t working. Against the Giants, they inexplicably adjusted game plans which were working, with predictable results. It was the type of effort which gets coaches fired.

The tie gave the Commanders sole possession of last place in the division, with a 1-3-1 record. Head coach Dan Quinn is running out of opportunities to turn the season around. Hopefully, he and his coaching staff have learned the lessons which can be drawn from the disappointing tie, which should have been a win.

Despite the result, there were some flashes of promise which the team might be able to build on against the 49ers, including standout performances by Jayden Daniels (up to the last play), Bill Croskey-Merritt, Sam Cosmi, K’Lavon Chaisson, Daron Payne, Sonny Styles and Amik Robertson and great plays from many of their teammates.

With key players like Nick Cross and Trey Amos potentially returning from injury, the heat under Quinn’s seat might provide the motivation he needs to lift his game and take the fight to the heavily favored 49ers.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s take a final look at who played where, who stood out, and who showed areas for improvement in the Commanders’ tie with the New York Giants.

Stats & Snaps Going on Hiatus: The Stats and Snaps will be taking a two week holiday, and will return after the Eagles game on November 1. The Commanders’ star QB answered that one by leading the team in rushing, with an impressive 103 yds, 2 TDs and 4 first downs in 9 attempts (11.4 Y/A; 55.6% success rate). His rushing total was the 7th highest in Week 5 at any position, and he was one of three players with over 100 rushing yds and 2 rushing TDs.

JD5 was also effective in the air, completing 17/25 attempts (68%, ADOT 8.2 yds) for 199 yds, 0 INT and 0 TD (40% success rate). He was sacked 5 times for 23 yds and faced 15 total pressures (40.5% of dropbacks), per PFF, but did a good job of protecting the ball and avoiding turnovers.

His mental lapse on the last play of overtime did negate an opportunity to go for a game winning field goal.
