GREEN BAY – Nothing fuels the fire inside a football player more than nearly 18 months of waiting.

That’s the spot John Williams found himself in this season, longing for his chance to play meaningful snaps again after a back injury sidelined the Packers’ offensive lineman for his entire rookie campaign.

Countless hours of rehab and preparation were with Williams as he left the sideline on Sunday and jogged directly into the worst-case scenario for a Green Bay O-line already riddled by injury.

Minutes into a pivotal NFC North showdown against Detroit, Green Bay not only lost starting center Sean Rhyan (ankle) but also saw his replacement, Jacob Monk, leave with a quad injury on the same series and not return.

Only 10 snaps into the game, Williams was suddenly the last man up for Green Bay at center, a position he’d only begun repping with regularity during training camp. Even then, none of those center snaps came with starting quarterback Jordan Love.

“Obviously, a nightmare scenario and, really, not the first time that’s happened to us,” said Williams on Tuesday. “Ain’t got much time to really dilly-dally, panic, think about what’s going on. Just got to go in there and get the job done.”

That he did during an admirable 58-snap relief appearance against the Lions. While the 6-4, 322-pound Williams lamented the fact Green Bay came up short in the 20-17 defeat, his NFL offensive debut carried a lot of meaning for the 2025 seventh-round pick.

Shortly after Williams was drafted by Green Bay, he underwent a back procedure that sidelined him for his entire rookie campaign aside from practicing for 21 days while on the physically unable to perform list near the end of the season.

Once cleared, Williams played across the offensive line during the 2026 offseason program and training camp. There were even times during 11-on-11 when he’d finish a rep at center and then slide over to left tackle, the position at which Williams started 24 games at Cincinnati over his final two collegiate seasons.

That’s where Williams mostly stayed until Sunday when the Packers had to break the developmental glass amidst an emergency situation inside one of the NFL’s most challenging road environments at Ford Field.
