ranked No. 3 in both national polls – recorded six sacks and limited St. Scholastica to nine first downs en route to a 56-6 victory over the Saints at a sunny Walt Hunting Stadium in Duluth’s West End.

Plum finished with six catches for 157 yards and two touchdowns, including an 83-yard scoring strike from senior quarterback Trey Feeney (Moorhead, Minn.) in the third quarter. Meanwhile, Melvin Jr. became the first Johnnie to rush for over 100 yards in a game this season, finishing with 16 carries for 139 yards and two second-quarter touchdowns in his first collegiate start. He also caught five passes for 54 yards.

With the victory, SJU (9-0, 8-0 MIAC) wrapped up at least a share of its MIAC-record 38th conference title and secured the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. The national postseason appearance will be the Johnnies’ 35th overall and 31st at the Division III level.

The Johnnies can claim sole possession of the MIAC championship with a victory over St. Olaf when the two teams meet in the regular-season finale at 6 p.m. next Saturday (Nov. 14) at TCO Stadium in Eagan.

Feeney – who leads all divisions of NCAA football in a number of categories, including passing touchdowns and passing yardage – shrugged off slow starts to both the first and second half to throw for 441 yards and five touchdowns. He has now thrown for over 400 yards in five-straight games and crossed the 300-yard mark eight times this season.

An interception on SJU’s first offensive snap set up a three-yard touchdown run by CSS quarterback Elijah Adzimahe and – after missing the extra point – St. Scholastica led 6-0 with 10:59 to play in the first quarter.

But that was where the day’s highlights ended for the Saints. In addition to sacking Adzimahe six times, the Johnnies got a pair of interceptions from juniors Mark Rogalski (Eden Prairie, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) and Westin Hoyt (Forest Lake, Minn.) and limited the Saints (1-8, 1-7 MIAC) to 152 yards of total offense.

Senior linebacker Aiden McMahon (Maple Grove, Minn.) led SJU in tackles with eight.

Feeney connected with Plum and fellow senior Thomas Jacobs (Lakeland, Minn./Stillwater Area) on touchdown passes of 30 and 12 yards to put SJU on top 14-6 early in the second quarter. Then Melvin Jr. rushed for touchdowns of 1 and 13 yards to increase the margin to 28-6 at halftime.

SJU again started slowly in the second half, fumbling the ball away on its first possession of the third quarter and punting on its second. But Feeney and Plum then connected on an 83-yard touchdown pass that expanded the lead to 35-6.

A 7-yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Riley Schwellenbach (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) on the opening play of the fourth quarter, a 6-yard touchdown pass to Jacobs with 10:12 to play and a 4-yard touchdown run by junior running back Wyatt McCabe (Mayer, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) with 5:26 remaining closed out the scoring.

Jacobs finished with nine catches for 126 yards and two touchdowns.
