He’s embraced what the fan base wants. He’s embraced what team owner Jerry Jones seeks.

A Super Bowl title.

“I don’t get caught up in the drought,” he said. “This is one year. This is the first year of mine. I mean, I’ve been here a couple of years, but when the season is over, we move on. We do. We move on. So, 2024 is over, now it’s 2025. Are we going to win the Super Bowl this year? I hope. I think we are. If we don’t, you move on.”

The Cowboys last won a Super Bowl title in the 1995 season. To think that a generation of fans hasn’t experienced a championship for the pro football team in the area is remarkable, considering that when the Cowboys first played in the NFL in 1960, it took them six years to reach the league championship game. They lost to the Green Bay Packers in 1966.

It will be nearly 30 years and the other three pro sports franchises in town, the Mavericks, Stars and Rangers, have won championships during that time.

The Cowboys are not alone in title droughts.

The Montreal Canadiens won 23 Stanley Cup trophies in franchise history. Their last title was in the 1992-93 season.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have 13 Stanley Cups. Last title? The 1966-67 season.

The New York Knicks’ last title was the 1972-73 season.

The franchise just fired coach Tom Thibodeau after leading it to the Eastern Conference title game for the first time in 25 seasons.

In the NFL, the San Francisco 49ers, the Cowboys’ biggest rival during the 1990s Super Bowl run, haven’t won a title since the 1994 season.

However, the 49ers have reached the NFC title game eight times with three Super Bowl appearances since their last championship.

Cowboys fans would take that.

Schottenheimer’s goals to end the drought begin with chemistry. He’s forming bonds with players and coaches with various off-the-field activities, whether it’s a paintball outing, seafood boil, individual dinners or attending charitable events.

The other part is making sure the talent assembled fits the schemes being applied. Schottenheimer noted that second-year tackle Tyler Guyton is getting comfortable in the new scheme, allowing him to perform better.

The Cowboys added faster players in free agency (Miles Sanders), the draft (Jaydon Blue) and by trades (George Pickens) to boost the offense.

“I believe that Schotty’s doing it the right way from the top down,” quarterback Dak Prescott said. “Take the offense and defense away from it, take the positions away from it, take the coach and player aspect away from it and let’s connect. And you’re talking to one of the most optimistic people I think you’ll find. I’ve seen it the way that it’s going, I see the way people are buying into it and it’s hard for me to think anything different.”

Recently, Schottenheimer invited former Cowboys players to The Star to connect with the current group. Schottenheimer said it was one of the best days of the offseason.

There were roughly 25 players in attendance from various periods whether it was Bob Lilly (1960s), Thomas ‘Hollywood’ Henderson and Drew Pearson (1970s), Michael Irvin (1990s), Bradie James (early 2000s) or Joe Looney (2010s).

Schottenheimer wanted his group to see their Super Bowl rings, hear their stories and understand the ultimate goal is winning titles.

He doesn’t believe the Super Bowl drought is burdensome, especially when you embrace it.

“I don’t think so,” he said. “Not when the head coach sits up here and talks about the ultimate goal is to win a world’s championship. I think it’s to be celebrated. You’ve got an incredible organization, incredible team, but the history speaks to what we’re about. So I think some people might view it as being burdensome. I don’t.

“I think it’s awesome. I think the more those guys are around, the more we see their Super Bowl rings, which they wear very proudly, I think that’s great for our guys because that’s why we do it. We don’t hide from that. Again, I talk a lot about that. Doesn’t mean there’s not a process, right? There’s a process that goes into winning a world’s championship. It just doesn’t you talk about the steps to help you get there.”

Winning a championship requires so much. Talent. Luck. Coaching. Health.

It’s never easy.

Schottenheimer is getting the buy-in from the locker room and the front office.

“I love that attitude that’s what you do every year,” team co-owner Stephen Jones said. “Only one is trying to repeat year in and year out and hats off to (Philadelphia). They got it done last year, there are 31 others who want to be where they are right now and certainly that’s what we’re shooting for. They’re in our division so we’re going to get to see them (in season opener). We look forward to it. We embrace it and obviously our goal is to win football games get ourselves in the playoffs and have success once we get there.”

The success has been lacking in the title department. But the Cowboys believe the man in charge can quench everyone’s thirst.

“You have to win games,” he said. “You’re supposed to win. You have to get into the playoffs, and all those things. But I think it’s meaningless to set an arbitrary goal (like), ‘Hey, we want to win 10 games or we want to do this.’ We want to win a Super Bowl and we don’t hide from that.”

FRISCO — The Super Bowl drought is at 29 seasons and counting.
