The Dallas Morning News reported Saturday<\/a> that former Dallas Cowboys<\/a> cornerback Kelvin Joseph Jr. was arrested and is facing charges of driving while intoxicated after he was allegedly involved in a fatal crash on U.S. Highway 75.<\/p>\n

Richardson police\u00a0were investigating a fatal crash Saturday when the former NFL player, Kelvin Wayne Joseph Jr., 25, called Plano police and said he had been involved in a crash.<\/p>\n

Police said a 27-year-old motorcyclist was killed in the accident.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time Joseph, a second-round pick by Dallas in 2021, has run into legal trouble, as other issues impacted his NFL career.<\/p>\n

Here are five things to know about the former Cowboy.<\/p>\n

Richardson police said Joseph was traveling north on U.S. 75 in a BMW when he collided with a motorcycle<\/a>. Police said no other vehicles were found at the scene.<\/p>\n

In a statement, police said officers observed \u201csigns of intoxication\u201d while speaking with Joseph. He was booked into the Richardson city jail at about 7:45 a.m., and he faces a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated and a felony charge of collision involving death. It was not clear if he has retained an attorney.<\/p>\n

2. High expectations with Cowboys<\/p>\n

Despite issues in Joseph\u2019s past, which include several failed drug tests, the Cowboys selected Joseph out of Kentucky in the second round (44th overall) of the 2021 NFL draft.<\/p>\n

Dallas was desperate for a defensive playmaker and a cornerback to play opposite Trevon Diggs<\/a> and hoped Joseph could take up that role from Week 1. <\/p>\n

Unfortunately for the Cowboys, Joseph didn\u2019t live up to those expectations in his first season, starting only two games as a rookie. <\/p>\n

By the time he took the field again for his second season, his career was already mired in controversy.<\/p>\n

3. Questioned in connection with shooting<\/p>\n

In April of 2022, Joseph was questioned by Dallas police in connection with a murder in Old East Dallas<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Joseph was involved in a disturbance on March 18 outside a bar in the 3600 block of Greenville Avenue the same night that Cameron Ray, 20, was fatally shot there, according to multiple sources. <\/p>\n

Police concluded<\/a> that Joseph was in the vehicle from which gunshots were fired that night, but that he wasn\u2019t the shooter. Two men from Joseph\u2019s hometown of Baton Rouge who were jailed in connection with the shooting confessed to the slaying on the same day that authorities interviewed Joseph<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Joseph faced no charges<\/a> stemming from the shooting.<\/p>\n

The NFL did not suspend Joseph for his involvement in the matter. He appeared in 16 games the following season, but again his on-the-field impact was lacking.<\/p>\n

4. Slow start to career continues<\/p>\n

Joseph started just one game in 2022, totalling 20 tackles but failing to intercept a pass for the second straight year. He was mostly limited to special teams duties.<\/p>\n

Joseph was ejected from the Thanksgiving Day game against the Las Vegas Raiders after he and Raiders safety Roderic Teamer got into a scuffle shortly after the start of the third quarter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

At the end of a punt play, Joseph and Teamer sparked a fight, which grew on the sidelines as players from both teams swarmed toward the Raiders bench. The scuffle spilled over and up against the railing that separates the players from the fans in the stands.<\/p>\n

Both Joseph and Teamer both received personal foul penalties and were ejected from the game.<\/p>\n

5. Traded from Cowboys, falls out of NFL<\/p>\n

During the 2023 preseason, the Cowboys traded Joseph to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for former first-rounder Noah Igbinoghene. Joseph appeared in four games with the Dolphins before being released by Miami.<\/p>\n

Joseph\u2019s career became that of a journeyman at that point, bouncing from Seattle to Kansas City at the end of the 2023-24 season then signing with the Colts that offseason. After the Colts released him in October of 2024, Joseph signed with the Vikings. His tenure with Minnesota lasted just 22 days before he was released once again.<\/p>\n

In February, Joseph signed with the DC Defenders of the United Football League. He played in nine games with the Defenders, but his 2025 arrest came the day before DC played a playoff game against St. Louis.<\/p>\n
