The Indianapolis Colts signed former New York Giants<\/a> quarterback Daniel Jones to compete with Anthony Richardson, and early signs indicate this was a wise decision. While Richardson suffered yet another injury setback, the former $160 million man<\/a> has reportedly impressed throughout early offseason practices. When asked about the free agent signee, head coach Shane Steichen couldn\u2019t stop praising his new quarterback.<\/p>\n

\u201cVery pleased with what we got right now. He\u2019s been doing a hell of a job,\u201d Steichen said. \u201cReally smart football player. Learned the offense very quickly, making really good decisions out there through OTAs. Obviously, want to carry that over to training camp, but he\u2019s done a really good job. \nColts Shane Steichen Praises Daniel Jones, Could Spell End For Anthony Richardson<\/p>\n

You never want to overreact to a single quote at this part of the NFL calendar, as the offseason is made for unjustified confidence. However, in the context of what\u2019s happened with Indianapolis, it\u2019s safe to say Daniel Jones is probably leading the battle to be the Colts QB1. Despite selecting him early in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft<\/a>, Steichen appears to be done with Richardson. After injuries limited him to just four games as a rookie, Steichen nearly guided his team to the playoffs with veteran backup Gardner Minshew<\/a> commanding the offense.<\/p>\n

Richardson returned in 2024 and was one of the league\u2019s least efficient quarterbacks. Struggling to complete routine passes, Steichen benched the first-round pick for the aging Joe Flacco. While he eventually returned to Richardson, it\u2019s safe to say Steichen wants a better option under center. Daniel Jones is not an elite quarterback by any stretch of the imagination, but the newest member of the Colts is reportedly doing the little things right and working hard to learn the offense, which could earn him the starting job.<\/p>\n
