Coach Jonathan Gannon even let his players loose early on the final day in Tempe.

But defensive coordinator Nick Rallis said Thursday on Arizona Sports’ Wolf & Luke that the preparation for the coming season is not put on full pause.

“This isn’t the time you step away physically,” said Rallis, who acknowledged the veteran mindset of defensive lineman Calais Campbell. “It’s the time that they have to continue to make strides and prepare themselves the volume, essentially, of work that’s going to come for the first week (of practices).”

In his third year leading Arizona’s defense, Rallis has consistently put his stamp on unorthodox schemes and he credits offensive pieces like tight end Trey McBride for making his craft adaptable and fresh.

“I love the competition we have right now,” Rallis told reporters on June 3. “Guys are making contested catches. Trey can’t make a catch without looking at me and talking to me. Marvin (Harrison Jr.) doesn’t say anything to me. … It’s been a lot of familiar faces that, let’s be honest, I’ve been talking a lot of smack to for a handful of years. And I love going back and forth in practice.”

Besides his other sounding boards on the coaching staff, Rallis said that he leans on Campbell’s soon-to-be 18 years of NFL experience when drawing up some of his plays.

“I talk to him about pass rush, I’m like, ‘What do you think?’ And he’s like, ‘I like it.’ I’m like, ‘I like it too,’” Rallis said with a laugh. “There’ll be things that he can add to it. I mean, I can’t tell you how much stuff we have that has come from players.”

With the avalanche of defensive talent that Arizona brought in this season — Josh Sweat and Dalvin Tomlinson to name a few — Rallis said the key is to put them “in positions to win one-on-one” battles with opposing offensive fronts.

Garrett Williams expects another jump in Year 3 with Cardinals

At the opposite end of the experience spectrum, third-year cornerback Garrett Williams is just “trying to do my thing” rather than fit a certain mold.

Williams made a significant leap from Year 1 to Year 2 with 16 game in 2024 after just nine in 2023 and 40 solo tackles to 19. He also had nine passes defensed and two interceptions in 2024 after two and one in 2023, respectively.

What did this improvement do for Williams’ state of mind?

“It kind of solidified what I already thought of myself,” Williams said Thursday on Wolf & Luke. “I don’t really try to put too big of an expectation other than just do better than what I was before. I feel like I know more now, so that means I should be able to do more now.”

When asked where on the field he sees himself playing more, Williams said that he can play the safety position in addition to corner but he’s “just excited to be just out there on the field.”

Nick Rallis notes rookie Walter Nolen III is ‘soaking up information’

Cardinals first-round pick and defensive tackle Walter Nolen III officially signed with the organization on Tuesday.

After watching him with a close eye, Rallis confirmed the Ole Miss product is serious with his work ethic.

“He puts the time in, oh yeah,” Rallis said. “He’s soaking up as much information, whether that’s football scheme, technique, how to train, how to take care of his health, psychologically, he’s about it.

“And then you get on the field and you see the athleticism.”

Nolen will join forces with veterans like Campbell and Tomlinson and battle others such as L.J. Collier and Darius Robinson for playing time.

With minicamp in the rearview mirror, the Cardinals shift their focus to training camp, which will begin at the end of July.

Follow @pwmoses11

The Arizona Cardinals’ mandatory minicamp, three days in length, ended on Thursday.
