The New York Giants took somewhat of a flyer on Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart in this year’s NFL Draft.<\/p>\n

It’s the first time general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll drafted a quarterback since they arrived in New York in 2022, and it could buy them some time.<\/p>\n

They’re both on the proverbial hot seat after a 3-14 season last year, and Dart could be the answer. But when?<\/p>\n

Dart has landed on CBS Sports’ list of rookies who need to impress in mandatory mincamp<\/a>, and it’s because he’s so closely linked to the potential fate of Schoen and Daboll.<\/p>\n

QB Jaxson Dart, Giants<\/p>\n

“The Giants traded up into the first round to secure Dart. There had been rumors of the front office and coaching staff’s infatuation with the quarterback prior to draft night and leadership has done nothing to hide those feelings post-selection,” Josh Edwards wrote<\/a>. “Dart may be the key to coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen’s fate beyond this season, as well.<\/p>\n

“In the short term, New York will almost certainly start veteran Russell Wilson Week 1, but the franchise is expected to ready Dart for action by season’s end.”<\/p>\n

Schoen has already stated publicly that the plan is for Dart to “sit and learn behind a couple of veterans.” So he won’t be on the field anytime soon – barring a catastrophic injury.<\/p>\n

And with the Ole Miss and now NYG connection, there’s no doubt that Dart will benefit from instruction by Eli Manning, whom he’s already close to and spoke with throughout the drafting process.<\/p>\n

As far as Dart impressing at Giants’ mandatory. inicamp, veteran wideout Darius Slayton spoke highly of the rookie.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe seems like a smart kid,\u201d Slayton told reporters<\/a>. \u201cHe definitely can spin it for sure. You can see the arm talent without a doubt. So, I think he\u2019s got a chance to be a good football player.\u201d<\/p>\n
