Washington, D.C., has a champion on the gridiron. Unfortunately, it’s not the Commanders \u2014 at least not yet \u2014 but the D.C. Defenders brought home the United Football League championship Saturday, defeating the Michigan Panthers 58-34 in St. Louis.<\/p>\n

Quarterback Jordan Ta’amu was outstanding, completing 21 of 30 passes for 390 yards and four touchdowns. Ta’amu, 27, was a standout quarterback for Ole Miss before entering the NFL in 2019. While Ta’amu has yet to throw an NFL pass, he’s been with several teams during the offseason and in training camp. He spent the summer of 2021 with the then-Washington Football Team. Ta’amu first joined the Defenders, where he’s been for the past three UFL seasons.<\/p>\n

While Saturday’s game was close early, the Defenders took control in the second quarter when Ta’amu threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to give D.C. a 15-13 lead. By halftime, that lead was 37-19. At one point, it was 52-19, but Michigan scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to make the final score look more respectable.<\/p>\n

The Washington Commanders<\/a> quickly acknowledged the Defenders’ new championship.<\/p>\n

Congratulations to the D.C. Defenders.
