{"id":139876,"date":"2025-06-18T15:01:12","date_gmt":"2025-06-18T15:01:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/139876\/"},"modified":"2025-06-18T15:01:12","modified_gmt":"2025-06-18T15:01:12","slug":"the-numbers-behind-the-browns-running-back-dilemma-the-data-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/139876\/","title":{"rendered":"The numbers behind the Browns\u2019 running back dilemma: The Data Series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WVRWJVMNRFERRMCGYWMHPFE6SU\">CLEVELAND, Ohio \u2014 For the first time since 2017, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/browns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Browns<\/a> run game will not feature Nick Chubb. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DTZHEXP5XBGBTHLPMD3XDNADNI\">Cleveland decided not to re-sign their 2018 draftee, and that led to Chubb moving to Houston.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PQVVGNACTRB75KRCQCHF4DYOVI\">A fan favorite and cornerstone of the locker room, his absence will open opportunity for remaining players and new faces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DMK67VAR45AQNDKNF2LFBBWNGU\">The Browns drafted Ohio State\u2019s Quinshon Judkins and Tennessee\u2019s Dylan Sampson, which implies upper management views the two as their backfield of the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KJIK4D4U6ZBR5JIOQJTJ675OTA\">This also comes after Cleveland finished 29th in rushing yards per game (94.6), 26th in rushing first downs (5.5), and tied for 30th in total rushing touchdowns (eight). Though two of those scores came from the quarterback room.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SZCSR5OYGRDB7PCXMWQLE5LYOE\">One could argue the reason for this was the regression in blocking, or a predictable offense, but the result is what matters at the end of it all. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2HAADCBS6FCLLDEZZJEQC72JH4\">And the results display the run game having played like a shell of itself in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7X2GPZWJMFEMHENL4PAVIEVYYI\">We\u2019ll analyze how the Browns\u2019 running back room has changed from last season to now, using data to evaluate both returning players and newcomers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4T22YIBEYVCNHBLZ64H7I3B7PM\">This data series will cover the strengths and flaws of each Browns position group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"F47D4UVAVJA2TFTNTLRBGVKHUI\">Today, we dive into the running backs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"U7FHMRJV5NA4XKTEYXGTEHV2XY\">Below, we analyze data from both the 2024 NFL season and the college season to evaluate the Browns\u2019 running back room.<\/p>\n<p>Jerome Ford &amp; Pierre Strong<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RHPDBEQYJBEZFDWNBKAJBXTHQM\">These 2022 draftees are somewhat the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/yaQeVnN6pUc?si=31uVl6f5PVUIGjf1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/yaQeVnN6pUc?si=31uVl6f5PVUIGjf1\">Last of the Mohicans<\/a>,\u201c or at least the remaining backs from the playoff roster a couple seasons back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XTLPAD5FAFARFPXVBDWNHZEOFA\">Strong<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VESVB26RK5D5BO664NCCA5PGNE\">As for Strong, his 108 rushing yards on 26 carries show he\u2019s still searching for more reps in a crowded RB room. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WNRHNU65IVCQ7OEWKTJ7I37JN4\">He did a little bit of this, and a little bit of that elsewhere with 104 receiving yards and 255 kickoff return yards.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/MPX7UOIA75EYPBG7D23WQRBQNY.JPG\"  fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Cleveland Browns OTAs\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"article__image-content\" height=\"600\" width=\"300\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__mm-image-caption-text\">Cleveland Browns running back Jerome Ford.Joshua Gunter, cleveland.com<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MPBHO7RNNVEJ7JRUQ6W2S3FC4A\">Ford<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AE2GRFTBPVEGVJ4OBBVQB2WCUE\">As for Ford, his carries fluctuated, recording double-digit carries only five times, finishing with 565 yards on 104 carries and three touchdowns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"U7IEULXAORCPZG4UGW7VOOPFK4\">Analytically, Ford did finish 15th in overall run grading (80.3), and finished sixth among qualifying backs in elusive rating (106.7), per Pro Football Focus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"36C46J4ZBBCDJHGCPHHPE6SRE4\">Elusive rating is a signature stat from Pro Football Focus that measures the success and impact of a runner with the ball, independently of the blocking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EPLUPJXHDNDJJPOBPERTOL565A\">In other words, it tracks how good a player is without the blocking from his O-line. It\u2019s somewhat backed up by his 26 forced missed tackles. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UJS76XM7OJHAPK3N6NVICWIVJA\">Ford, who averaged 5.4 yards per carry, even ranked fifth in yards over expected per attempt (1.1), per Next Gen Stats. But a rebuttal to this is Ford facing eight defenders in the box only 4.81% of the time, the fewest of all running backs.<\/p>\n<p>YAC<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VMOFIF6RUVASFMLBORMCKPF3ZI\">But if there\u2019s one area these two can lead the charge in, it\u2019s in yards after contact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VBY5HQNSOJHUNKPHFPCF3O672Y\">Cleveland finished 31st in rushing yards gained after contact (617), per Pro Football Reference.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CPKRPSIVBFAGTE6QMTDG2F3BXA\">As seen below, since Kevin Stefanski took over in 2020, this is the Cleveland\u2019s worst ranking. <\/p>\n<p>YearYAC TotalRank20201,1503rd20211,2101st20221,0672nd202388310th202461731st<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RFQMOH2G4NGSLE7KL3AY3M76EY\">Early on, it was Chubb and Kareem Hunt who carried the YAC category.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GXIX7PMSDZGJ5OSJN2CHK24BE4\">After Chubb\u2019s season-ending injury in 2023, Ford, Hunt, and Strong combined their abilities to keep their earned YAC afloat, and finished top 10.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KV7PM3MXRJAJRIIUEDLB27ME4Y\">They couldn\u2019t escape the opposing defense in 2024 after contact, and maybe Ford and Strong can help lead the change.<\/p>\n<p>Quinshon Judkins &amp; Dylan Sampson<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"55QZD5H6HFCLZAXQAP66SYYPPQ\">The young bucks made a splash at the college ranks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GHJVGXOBCZFJBKMFYNF2PKTDPE\">Let\u2019s see how they did and what they can carry, from a data perspective.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/RZ3ERPGZGNAETNFZMUM4APPQMM.JPG\"  fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Scenes from Cleveland Browns mandatory minicamp Wednesday, June 11, 2025 in Berea\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"article__image-content\" height=\"600\" width=\"300\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__mm-image-caption-text\">Cleveland Browns running back Quinshon Judkins.Joshua Gunter, cleveland.com<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4DNUIIVBOBEK5FMDDTANCHZGIE\">Judkins<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CCHQ74MMCNAFZBSMHXTXNLDMXY\">With the Buckeyes, Judkins split carries with TreVeyon Henderson, but still managed to finish 41st in the country in rushing yards (1,060).<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JENSSYTS3VFNHJZMRPRT5WHUPM\">He played an integral part in the Buckeyes\u2019 2024 College Football Playoff run, earning 100 rushing yards on 11 carries (9.1 per carry) for two touchdowns in the national championship win over Notre Dame.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"263VMCC62VFEZN7D5FSQY2MWG4\">He finished 12th in run grading (90.0) and only recorded one fumble, per PFF.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PLN7K662VVCUFES4R6CCVB6GIU\">His 43 MTF was solid, along with 3.04 yards gained after contact, per PFF.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/LAWUI736VVF3JA3W7JEVDPGBW4.JPG\"  fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Cleveland Browns veteran minicamp\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"article__image-content\" height=\"600\" width=\"300\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__mm-image-caption-text\">Cleveland Browns running back Dylan Sampson.John Kuntz, cleveland.com<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FYWVH3YW5BGO7NX54WKD4MD4I4\">Sampson<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JQDDWFR7WNGZJP7XXEAXIG5C4A\">With the Volunteers, Sampson was the lone back and delivered by finishing ninth in the country in rushing yards (1,491) and tied for fourth in touchdowns (22).<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DCZ7HUNJPBDKTINC7VGI7TS5JI\">He finished 12th in run grading (90.0) and only recorded one fumble, per PFF.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"USJZNIJ4XFBCFAUZZUXMYCL274\">His 70 MTF ranked seventh among qualifying backs. And within rushing yardage on designed attempts of more than 15 yards, Sampson ranked 30th among all qualifying running backs (453), per PFF.<\/p>\n<p>Designated runs going left end<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7BLGRKN2GBEWBHK3UWXUGZWXAY\">The one area these backs have in common is putting in work when rushing around the left offensive tackle.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/HTGF3734GJCMVF5K3NM2ZIWKVY.png\"  fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Quinshon Judkins Rushing by Direction\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"article__image-content\" height=\"600\" width=\"300\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__mm-image-caption-text\">The totals by rushing direction for Quinshon Judkins, per PFF.Cleveland.com<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AA464YKGIRHUVJXKRBMH7PRAGQ\">Judkins recorded his most carries (49) and yards (254) on designated runs around left end. He averaged 5.4 yards per carry going in that direction, earned four touchdowns and 12 rushing first downs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Y74JU7OIZJE4BCE2Q5HS5SB67E\">His Volunteers left tackle was Lance Heard, who tied for 12th in fewest sacks (two) allowed among left tackles from the Southeastern Conference, per PFF.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XEL7U3S4J5F25CGU2EY25HMD74\">These rushing directions were likely directed by their offensive lines, but both backs still produced. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UTF4647A3BEVVOUPIZF3BNLSZE\">Dawand Jones will be the starting left tackle, and while he eyes his own bounce back, maybe that is something for Cleveland to take into consideration going forward. <\/p>\n<p>Conclusion<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KYAXVG6H7RGP3PJMQYBU3LLKSM\">The offense is like a tightrope, where the unit works better when all things align at even level.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7EG7ZUB3UFAGVPPVNT7AG3UBS4\">The Browns\u2019 offensive brand historically relates to a strong run game.
