After a long offseason filled with much uncertainty and anxiety, Aaron Rodgers finally revealed he would be signing with Pittsburgh to be their starting quarterback. Now that the Steelers have clarity at the game’s most important position, it gives the team and its fans real optimism heading into the season.

Steelers.com

Steelers’ Aaron Rodgers speaks to members of the Pittsburgh media.

Even though Rodgers won just five games with the New York Jets in the 2024 season, many analysts have pointed out that the team’s dysfunction went far beyond the quarterback. Poor offensive line play, questionable coaching decisions, and a lack of consistency on offense all contributed to the Jets’ underwhelming performance. In Pittsburgh, Rodgers will be stepping into a more stable environment with a veteran coaching staff and a system that’s expected to cater to his strengths.

Mark Schlereth recently spoke on The Stinkin’ Truth Podcast about a private conversation he had with Rodgers that summed up the quarterback’s frustrations. According to Schlereth, Rodgers openly criticized the Jets’ schematics and preparation, calling them confusing and lacking in cohesion. That conversation, now making waves after being leaked, paints a picture of a future Hall of Famer eager for a fresh start—and the Steelers might be exactly what he needs.

“Aaron and I had a conversation about when he was with the Jets and how abysmal their running game was and how schematically it made no sense,” Schlereth said on The Stinkin Truth Podcast. “I started the conversation, and then Aaron went on for about a 25-minute diatribe on just their run game, but I was like watching the Jets last year. It was the worst schematic, the worst schematic run game I had ever watched in the NFL.”

Robert Saleh was fired as head coach of the Jets on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, after the team got off to a slow and disappointing start. Defensive Coordinator Jeff Ulbrich was named the interim head coach, but the Jets’ struggles only worsened. Without clear leadership or a consistent offensive identity, the team quickly spiraled and fell out of playoff contention.

Sam Navarro / Imagn Images

Former Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers during a game against the Miami Dolphins in 2024.

In the aftermath, Schlereth pointed to the lack of structure in New York as a major reason for Rodgers’ underwhelming season. Rodgers was never able to find a rhythm within the Jets’ system, which Schlereth described as confusing and poorly executed. He believes the environment in New York never gave Rodgers a real chance to succeed.

“One thing I know about Arthur Smith, he does a great job in the run game,” Schlereth said. “He marries the run game with the play-action game. He is excellent at that.”

Schlereth has expressed strong confidence in Steelers Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith and his ability to run a system that fits the 41-year-old Rodgers. He believes Pittsburgh has the personnel, coaching, and philosophy to bring out the best in the veteran quarterback. With a scheme tailored to his strengths, Rodgers could be in a position to bounce back in a major way.

Steelers’ Offense Could Be Sneaky Good In 2025

The Steelers offense may not be loaded with elite stars, but it does have solid depth and several players capable of making a real impact. The wide receiver group is headlined by DK Metcalf, with Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson, and veteran Robert Woods rounding out the expected top four. While others will compete for spots on the depth chart, this mix of size, speed, and experience gives Rodgers a versatile group to work with.

Tight end Pat Freiermuth is expected to play a key role as well, particularly as a reliable target over the middle. His connection with Rodgers could be one of the most important elements of the passing game, especially on third downs and in the red zone. Freiermuth’s ability to find soft spots in coverage makes him an ideal safety valve for a quarterback who thrives on timing and precision.

Karl Roser / Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (8) practices at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex during the 2025 minicamp, Tuesday June 10, 2025.

In the run game, Pittsburgh has a promising blend of youth and experience. Rookie Kaleb Johnson has already turned heads with his burst and vision, while Jaylen Warren is expected to take on a larger role in his third season. Kenneth Gainwell adds more versatility as a pass-catching threat out of the backfield. With the right play-calling from Smith and Rodgers at the helm, Schlereth believes this unit has the potential to reach new heights.

The Pittsburgh Steelers finally figured out who would be their starting quarterback for the 2025 season.
