The race to become the 2026 NFL Draft\u2019s top quarterback is officially on. Plenty of candidates are out there ahead of the upcoming college football season. One of them is Drew Allar<\/a> out of Penn State<\/a>, entering his third year as the Nittany Lions\u2019 starter.<\/p>\n

SI\u2019s Albert Breer was asked to name his early QB1 in the draft, opting to go with Allar. Starting experience was cited as a big reason why, along with some of the traits Allar possesses. Obviously, the process is in the infant stages and there is plenty of time between now and next April. However, Allar currently has the eye of Breer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I\u2019d go with Allar,\u201d Breer said<\/a>. \u201cHe and (Clemson<\/a>\u2018s Cade) Klubnik<\/a> are the only guys in the above group that have multiple years starting under their belts. He\u2019s also got plus size and arm strength, and moves around better than some folks think. And my bet would be that NFL guys are really going to like him, the more they get around him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Allar announced he would return to Penn State for the 2025 season before beginning last season\u2019s run in the College Football Playoff<\/a>. He never wavered from the decision, sticking true to his word, even as the Nittany Lions made a run to the semifinals.<\/p>\n

Last year brought positive signs from Allar. His completion percentage grew by over six points to 66.5 while throwing for 3,327 yards, 25 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Penn State might enjoy seeing his performances against big-name opponents improve but overall, the development continues to move in the right direction.<\/p>\n

Taking another step forward would mean Allar is right in the middle of the QB1 discussion. He already is, in Breer\u2019s opinion, although it is a projection. An entire season is left to be played and opinions will be mixed throughout.<\/p>\n

Alongside Allar and Klubnik, LSU<\/a>\u2018s Garrett Nussmeier<\/a> and LaNorris Sellers<\/a>, out of South Carolina<\/a>, were mentioned by Breer. Oklahoma<\/a> transfer John Mateer<\/a> \u201cis another one worth watching\u201d as well. Breer even mentioned Arch Manning<\/a>. However, he admitted the Texas quarterback coming out for the 2026 draft would be a surprise.<\/p>\n

Pittsburgh, PA, will be the one hosting the 2026 NFL Draft. Usually, being QB1 equates to being the No. 1 overall pick. Allar would have the opportunity to hear his name called by Roger Goodell in the state where he played his college football.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The race to become the 2026 NFL Draft\u2019s top quarterback is officially on.
