Originally the term referred to a select group of college <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/sports\/American-football\" class=\"md-crosslink autoxref \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gridiron football<\/a> players. Athletes selected to an All-America team are known as All-Americans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"topic-paragraph\">The first All-America team <a class=\"md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw\" data-term=\"comprised\" href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/comprised\" data-type=\"MW\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">comprised<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/sports\/football-soccer\" class=\"md-crosslink autoxref \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">football<\/a> players, picked by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Caspar-Whitney\" class=\"md-crosslink \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Caspar Whitney<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Walter-Camp\" class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Walter Camp<\/a> in 1889 for a magazine called The Week\u2019s Sport. Whitney and Camp continued to <a class=\"md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw\" data-term=\"collaborate\" href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/collaborate\" data-type=\"MW\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">collaborate<\/a> in selecting All-America teams, working for The Week\u2019s Sport again in 1890 and then for Harper\u2019s Weekly from 1891 through 1897. Camp made his own selections for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Colliers\" class=\"md-crosslink \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Collier\u2019s<\/a> magazine from 1898 through 1924. Camp\u2019s reputation as football player, coach, and rules maker made his selections generally accepted. When Camp died in 1925, Collier\u2019s engaged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Grantland-Rice\" class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Grantland Rice<\/a>, the era\u2019s most prominent sportswriter, to continue the annual selection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"topic-paragraph\">Even before 1900, other football devotees had begun making their own All-America choices. The number of these selections increased as the popularity of football grew; major newspapers, news services, feature syndicates, and eventually magazines (most notably Look) picked annual teams. Rice and Collier\u2019s began the practice of <a class=\"md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off eb\" data-term=\"compiling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/dictionary\/compiling\" data-type=\"EB\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">compiling<\/a> their selections from the findings of a nationwide board of the American Football Coaches Association, which continues to select an All-America team.
