The concept of trading back into Round 1 for a franchise quarterback was a good one, even as NFL Draft opinions were split when the New York Giants <\/a>selected\u00a0Mississippi quarterback Jaxson Dart.<\/p>\n

The concept of signing veteran Russell Wilson is a sound one, too.<\/p>\n

But yes, opinions were split there as well.<\/p>\n

But soon comes training camp … and no “splits” allowed. Decisions must be made.<\/p>\n

Dart<\/a> had a sizable jump waiting for him in the NFL. Nevertheless, New York<\/a> wouldn\u2019t have taken Dart without believing in him, and head coach Brian Daboll is tasked with ensuring his development goes smoothly. The team has helped provide an encouraging environment for Dart, starting with two veteran quarterbacks, Jameis Winston backing up Wilson … and Wilson slated to be the No. 1 guy.<\/p>\n

But not forever, right, Adam Schefter?<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Giants would like to be as patient as they can with their rooking first round draft pick Jaxson Dart,\u201d ESPN’s Schefter said, “and go with Russell Wilson. But, let\u2019s keep in mind that once before Brian Daboll and the Giants\u2019 general manager Joe Schoen\u00a0were in Buffalo and the plan there was to be very patient with Josh Allen, and he was called on to start a lot sooner than anybody expected.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wouldn’t that be something? The Josh Allen backstory with the Buffalo Bills, for whom the Giants coach and GM once worked, repeating itself in the Big Apple?<\/p>\n

But let’s slow down here.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’m an aggressive player as is, so I think that’s definitely something that I have to continue to learn,\u201d Dart <\/a>said recently of patience. \u201cI think this practice setting is a great time for me to do it. Then obviously you make mistakes, you do some really good things and you get to go back and watch the tape and pick up on the things that you need to improve on.\u201d<\/p>\n

That goes for the rookie QB.<\/p>\n

And – with all due respect to Schefter – it goes for the Giants, too.<\/p>\n

The player will want to maintain the aggressiveness that makes him dangerous without committing the turnovers that threaten New York\u2019s offense. … as he chases playing time.<\/p>\n

But the organization? Daydreaming about Dart as “The Next Josh Allen” is fun. … and grossly premature.<\/p>\n
