Newly acquired Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Jonnu Smith revealed on Terron Armstead\u2019s podcast<\/a> that he and Jalen Ramsey discussed landing with the Steelers prior to Monday\u2019s blockbuster trade. Rumors were swirling in the last several weeks that the Miami Dolphins were looking to trade Ramsey and Smith.<\/p>\n

\u201cMe and [Jalen Ramsey] chopped it up before this happened,\u201d Smith told Armstead. \u201cWe chopped it up before this happened. He obviously knew the situation that he was in in Miami and felt that it was time for him to move on. We chopped it up one-on-one about what potentially could be as rumors [were] floating around.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Steelers have made the playoffs in four of the last five years, but they have not won a playoff game in that span. Smith thinks he and Ramsey are the missing pieces to get the Steelers over the hump and make a run at a Super Bowl.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re like, \u2018Bro, if this thing really goes down, if this thing really happens, Pittsburgh is a team that\u2019s historically going to be always be in the dance,’\u201d Smith said. \u201cIt\u2019s just maybe a couple missing pieces like us that can fill that void and get over that hump.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith said he and Ramsey both shared a strong desire to play for Mike Tomlin.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne thing that we both admired about the situation was the culture. The culture that Mike [Tomlin] established. I can\u2019t wait to play for him,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n

Smith, 29, is coming off the best season of his eight-year NFL career. In 2024, he\u00a0recorded a career-high<\/a>\u00a088 catches for 884 yards and eight touchdowns. Smith was also named to his first Pro Bowl last season.<\/p>\n

The Steelers agreed to give him a one-year, $12 million extension as part of the trade. Smith was scheduled to make just $4.8 million this season.<\/p>\n

Under a great head coach with Mike [Tomlin]. Back with my guy Arthur Smith, who I\u2019ve had a lot of success with in my career. And so I\u2019m extremely blessed, bro. I couldn\u2019t be more excited.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ramsey, 30, has been one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL over the last decade. He is a three-time first-team All-Pro in 2017, 2020 and 2021, and a seven-time Pro Bowler from 2017-23. He won Super Bowl LVI with the Los Angeles Rams after the 2021 season.<\/p>\n

Initially drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Florida State, Ramsey has now been traded three times, first to the Rams in 2019, then to the Dolphins in 2023 and now to the Steelers.<\/p>\n
