During Indianapolis Colts <\/a>media day, which took place during minicamp, we got our first look at free agent running back Khalil Herbert in the full home uniform.<\/p>\n

Herbert signed a one-year, $1.17 million deal<\/a> to join the Colts<\/a> earlier this offseason.<\/p>\n

“I feel like I can do everything,” Herbert said during his introductory press conference.<\/a> “Short yardage, outside, inside zone. I feel like I’ve been a part of offenses that have done it all. Catching the ball out of the backfield, pass pro. I’ve been asked to do it all, and I feel like I can do it well. I feel like I can do anything and help out in any way.”<\/p>\n

Herbert spent the 2024 season initially with Chicago, where he played his first three NFL seasons, before being traded to Cincinnati.<\/p>\n

Overall, Herbert carried the ball only 36 times last season and averaged just 3.6 yards per rush, according to PFF. However, in his first three NFL seasons, Herbert’s role and efficiency was much greater.<\/p>\n

From 2021 to 2023 with the Bears<\/a>, Herbert carried the ball 364 times and averaged a hefty 4.9 yards per rush. For the most part, his role in the passing game over his career has been relatively small, with 64 targets in four seasons.<\/p>\n

Herbert will be competing with DJ Giddens and Tyler Goodson for playing time behind Jonathan Taylor. Although he is a recent free agent signing, contract-wise he is not a roster lock. If the Colts were to release him, Herbert would leave behind a dead cap hit of just $482,500.<\/p>\n

“Just come in here, try to learn, try to help,” Herbert said about joining the Colts. “Being available, being a guy that can help carry the load. Just try to come in and bring what I can to the team, to the field, whatever is needed. That’s how I look at it and being able to help in whatever way I can.”<\/p>\n
