ENGLEWOOD, Colo. \u2014 After a career-best performance, wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. has earned a conference honor.<\/p>\n
Mims was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week following Denver’s Week 15 win over the Colts, the NFL announced Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Mims returned three punts for 97 yards, the second-highest total by an NFL player in a game this season. The 97 yards are also the most by a Bronco in a single game since Trindon Holliday, who posted 121 punt return yards in 2013.<\/p>\n
“[Mim’s] day was fantastic,” Head Coach Sean Payton said Tuesday. “One of the keys to victory [was that] they were pretty good with their net punt. I think they were [ranked] sixth, and we were eighth. One of the keys in the kicking game was win the net punt battle, and we were able to do that. Those were game-changing plays.”<\/p>\n
Mims’ longest return of the day came at a critical moment in the fourth quarter. With the Broncos trailing by three, Mims returned a punt 61 yards to set up Denver’s offense at the Colts’ 15-yard line. The return \u2014 which was the longest by a Bronco since Diontae Spencer’s 83-yard return in 2020 \u2014 ultimately led to a Denver touchdown and a lead the team would never relinquish.<\/p>\n
The Oklahoma product’s other two returns also set up a pair of Broncos drives at the Indianapolis 39-yard line and Denver 48-yard line, respectively.<\/p>\n
This marks the second AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honor of Mims’ career, as he earned the award for Week 10 as a rookie last season.<\/p>\n
Through 15 weeks in 2024, five Broncos players have combined to earn six AFC Player of the Week nods. Mims joins Wil Lutz (Week 3 and Week 12), Pat Surtain II (Week 5), Cody Barton (Week 7) and Bo Nix (Week 11).
