But on Tuesday, Jahns informed his fan base on social media that he would be stepping away from his role at the New York Times-owned outlet, but will remain a figure in the local Chicago sports media scene.

Jahns, who first started covering Chicago sports at the Chicago Sun-Times in 2005, shared his thoughts about leaving The Athletic, thanking a number of his colleagues like Dan Pompei, Jon Greenberg, and Scott Powers for helping him in his career.

“This isn’t easy. It’s hard to say goodbye to a great place to work,” wrote Jahns in a post on X. “A place with great colleagues and close friends. A place where some of my best work was done and a place that changed the sportswriting game. But here we go: I’m leaving The Athletic. What comes next is very exciting. I’m not leaving Chicago. In fact, you might see even more of me. I can’t wait to tell you about it. But that’s for later this week.

“Right now, I’d like to express my gratitude for everyone at The Athletic. It was truly a dream job. I’ve said this many times but The Athletic is everything I thought great sportswriting could be. There’s so many people to thank. But I do want to highlight some. Mike Sansone is a fantastic editor and a better man. I was fortunate to have him handle everything I did. I grew up reading and looking up to Dan Pompei. Working with him was an honor. I’m forever thankful for Jon Greenberg and Scott Powers. The Athletic wouldn’t be here without them, and they were instrumental in me joining the company.

“And then there’s Kevin Fishbain, a colleague and teammate who became a dear friend. I’ll miss working with him the most. Stay tuned for what’s next. I wouldn’t be here doing what I love without the support of my family and friends but also those who read what I write and listen to what I have to say. I’m forever grateful.”

Some personal news … pic.twitter.com/rh6IolUtdY

— Adam Jahns (@adamjahns) July 8, 2025

Thankfully for Chicago sports fans, it sounds as if Jahns will continue to cover Chicago sports in some form or fashion based on his statement.

Jahns does co-host the Hoge & Jahns podcast at The Athletic.
