Mayor Muriel E. Bowser and the Commanders \u201cwant to open\u201d the team\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2025\/04\/28\/commanders-dc-reach-37b-deal-for-roofed-stadium-at-rfk-site\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2025\/04\/28\/commanders-dc-reach-37b-deal-for-roofed-stadium-at-rfk-site\/\">$3.7B stadium in 2030<\/a> &#8212; in part because \u201cit would put D.C. in position to host games during the 2031 women\u2019s World Cup and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2024\/07\/12\/Unpacks\/rugby-world-cup-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2024\/07\/12\/Unpacks\/rugby-world-cup-summit\/\">2031 men\u2019s Rugby World Cup<\/a>,\u201d according to Jhabvala &amp; Goff of the WASHINGTON POST. However, to do so requires a \u201c\u2018very, very specific\u2019 construction timetable.\u201d The team and D.C. \u201cagreed to an exclusive negotiating period\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2025\/07\/02\/commanders-stadium-negotiations-still-underway-as-project-nears-july-15-deadline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2025\/07\/02\/commanders-stadium-negotiations-still-underway-as-project-nears-july-15-deadline\/\">that expires July 15<\/a>. Some council members and D.C. Council Chair Phil Mendelson have said that \u201cthey need more time to analyze the economic impact of the deal and negotiate any changes with the team.\u201d Cities interested in bidding to host the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2025\/07\/09\/ussf-hosting-workshop-for-potential-2031-wwc-hosts\/?issueId=7L2CZ4EK55FA7OZDH4EERG664M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2025\/07\/09\/ussf-hosting-workshop-for-potential-2031-wwc-hosts\/?issueId=7L2CZ4EK55FA7OZDH4EERG664M\">2031 Women\u2019s World Cup<\/a> have until the end of September to \u201cformally declare they want to host.\u201d The Commanders and Bowser have \u201cpushed for a 2030 opening\u201d with the expectation the project will \u201cinevitably have delays.\u201d However, they claim that a delay by the D.C. Council would \u201cpush back the early utility work during demolition of the old RFK Stadium and potentially create a domino effect.\u201d Jhabvala &amp; Goff wrote it is not \u201cuncommon for FIFA to approve stadiums that have yet to break ground or are under construction.\u201d Jhabvala &amp; Goff added, \u201cThe hope is to break ground in 2026, return the Commanders to D.C. four years later and begin a cascade of international events thereafter &#8211;\u202fperhaps including a Super Bowl.\u201d However, 2032 is the first year in which the Commanders\u2019 \u201cnew stadium is eligible\u201d &#8212; if it opens in time for the 2030 season (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2025\/07\/08\/dc-football-stadium-rfk-womens-world-cup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2025\/07\/08\/dc-football-stadium-rfk-womens-world-cup\/\">WASHINGTON POST, 7\/8<\/a>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"D.C.
