The lengthy standoff between Jonah Savaiinaea and the Miami Dolphins<\/a> may be nearing its end and just in the nick of time.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday night, the San Francisco 49ers<\/a> reached a deal<\/a> with their second-round pick, Alfred Collins. It ended a negotiations logjam that left almost every second-rounder without a deal heading into the beginning of training camps.<\/p>\n

After the first two picks of the second round, Carson Schwesinger and Jayden Higgins, received fully guaranteed deals in May, other second-rounders presumably hoped to receive full guarantees of their own. But Collins settled for guarantees of $9 million on his $10.3 million deal.<\/p>\n

Immediately, dominoes started to fall. The Baltimore Ravens<\/a> are reportedly close to a deal<\/a> with their second-round pick Mike Green, the Denver Broncos<\/a> agreed to a contract<\/a> with R.J. Harvey, and the Chicago Bears<\/a> reached terms with two of<\/a> their three<\/a> second-rounders.<\/p>\n

There’s still hurdles for the Dolphins, though. Collins was the No. 43 pick in the draft and the first players to reportedly agree to terms Thursday were all picked near the tail end of the second round. While the majority of second-round picks lost their leverage in a hunt for a full guarantee when Collins settled for less, Savaiinaea is one of eight players who was taken between Higgins and Collins.<\/p>\n

Savaiinaea, the No. 37 overall selection, may still make a run at a full guarantee. But the tight range between that lofty goal and the floor set by Collins means negotiations may suddenly be much simpler for Miami and the offensive lineman.<\/p>\n

A deal can’t come soon enough as the Dolphins will likely be relying upon Savaiinaea to start immediately as a rookie and bolster a run game that regressed significantly in 2024. Perhaps, the end of the second-rounder deadlock means Miami will be ready to begin its work to get Savaiinaea ready for Week 1 sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n
