Maye largely gave a generic answer, noting he texted Milton and wished him the best of luck. However, WEEI’s Adam Jones and Rich Keefe focused on this line from Maye.

” … For him to go and get a chance to be a backup,” Maye told reporters.

The title of the YouTube video of the segment where Jones and Keefe discuss the line was title, “Did Drake Maye take a shot at Joe Milton III during his press conference?” That was the takeaway from that line in a news conference that the WEEI hosts admitted they didn’t watch.

They claimed Maye “ran away” after the final question, which was noted by New England vice president of communications Stacey James. And yes, sometimes reporters sneak in an extra question, but the hosts should know that there is a fine line to that.

Story continues below advertisement

Sports radio is a tough gig,, especially in early spring with dead time on the football calendar. But it sure seemed like Jones and Keefe were stretching Maye’s words just to fill airtime.

Of course Milton will be a backup. The Cowboys invested a lot of money in Dak Prescott. That isn’t changing because they traded for a sixth-round quarterback. The WEEI hosts even stretched the truth that he was a backup in New England. Not really, right? Jacoby Brissett played poorly, but he became the backup to Maye when the 22-year-old took over as the starter.

It’s not uncommon for Boston to throw shots at a person when they leave town, and that’s felt like the case with the reports questioning Milton’s character. And the story seemingly will persist until football season really kicks off.

Drake Maye will be in the spotlight this season, which means Patriots fans and media will psychoanalyze everything…

[2050
833,7,5646,1167,249,2326,2094,6,208
0":"post-21823","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-new-england-patriots","8":"tag-drake-maye","9":"tag-football","10":"tag-joe-milton-iii","11":"tag-new-england","12":"tag-new-england-patriots","13":"tag-newengland","14":"tag-newenglandpatriots","15":"tag-nfl","16":"tag-patriots
["GET
