EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) \u2014 Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is testing out tinted contact lenses as training camp opens.<\/p>\n
He wore them Thursday under sunny skies after trying them out earlier in the week while working with the team\u2019s rookies.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re like sunglasses,\u201d he said. \u201cThey really helped. I didn\u2019t have to squint nearly as much.\u201d<\/p>\n
Herbert tried wearing a tinted visor a couple years ago and didn\u2019t like having to constantly clean it off.<\/p>\n
The contacts make Herbert\u2019s blue eyes appear red.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I stepped in the huddle, I think some of the guys were a little surprised,\u201d he said, smiling, \u201cbut they were like, \u2018Oh, we\u2019re going to score.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker told \u201cThe Herd with Colin Cowherd\u201d that he and Herbert wore the red contacts to dinner recently.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe looked like we were vampires,\u201d Dicker said, adding that initially people didn\u2019t recognize them. \u201cWe were like, \u2018This is incredible.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Herbert said he thinks he could wear the contacts in games with a medical prescription due to sensitive eyes.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf I\u2019m able to see the field better because of it, it definitely helps,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
