Defensive end JT Tuimoloau, running back DJ Giddens, and defensive tackle Tim Smith all have paths to contributing this season as well, and potentially could do so a fair amount.

Also, adding offensive tackle Jalen Travis in the fourth round gives the Colts some added flexibility to move Matt Goncalves to right guard.

But even so, as Edholm mentions, while on paper, between the additions made in free agency and the draft, along with hiring Lou Anarumo to lead the defense, the Colts’ roster does look better than it did this time last year, ultimately the quarterback play is going to determine this team’s ceiling. And that remains a big question mark and is going to continue to do so until proven otherwise.

“All that’s left now is to figure out that pesky quarterback situation,” wrote Edholm. “Forgive me if the Anthony Richardson–Daniel Jones competition (with a dash of sixth-rounder Riley Leonard thrown in) does not have me all hot and bothered, even if they do have a better environment in which to work now. The AFC South remains a division up for grabs, even with the Texans occupying the captain’s chair. I believe Indy is better equipped to make a run at Houston, but until one of the quarterbacks establishes himself as the leader, it’s difficult to see much daylight.”

I’ll also add one more thing here, the right guard position has me a bit concerned. Now, could Goncalves slide into that role seamlessly? Certainly. But that’s not a given either, and the prudent move would be to have a competition for that playing time.

We can speculate all we want about the quarterback battle, but if the offensive line play isn’t good enough, I’m not sure it matters who is under center.

Following the NFL draft, where do the Indianapolis Colts now fall in the NFL .com power rankings?
