The Patriots started their offseason program last month, and it sounds like Drake Maye is busy working to become the star New England hopes he can be.<\/p>\n
Maye\u2019s sophomore season didn\u2019t start under ideal circumstances. The 22-year-old had to get to know a new head coach and offensive coordinator, which means a new scheme to learn. However, it doesn\u2019t sound like<\/a> Maye went through a tough transition and had been studying tape of a franchise legend.<\/p>\n \u201cYeah, it\u2019s been great. The guys last year I really enjoyed, and so far with (Josh) McDaniels, it\u2019s been awesome,\u201d Maye told reporters Thursday, per the Patriots. \u201cHe\u2019s been an offensive coordinator, a head coach at a high level. His stuff works. The proof is in the pudding. He\u2019s coached a lot of different guys. He\u2019s coached the best that\u2019s ever to do it. It\u2019s been pretty cool to watch old things of Tom (Brady) and see how he does it. A bunch of different guys played at a high level in the offense, not just Tom. It\u2019s been cool to watch, and I\u2019m kind of learning the ways and learning the ins and outs of it.\u201d<\/p>\n Maye offered small details that indicated he\u2019s been watching tape of McDaniels\u2019 offense to garner a visual idea of what\u2019s expected of him<\/a>. During the final weeks of the Alex Van Pelt era, Maye was given more control of the offense, and he\u2019s embracing that power even more with McDaniels calling plays.<\/p>\n \u201cI think the ball\u2019s in my hands, I think you want that,\u201d Maye said. \u201cI hold the pin last. That\u2019s what they say. I think that\u2019s what you want. I get the best view back there. Me and maybe the running back, especially in the gun, but even under center, you get the best view of the defense. And you\u2019re the one that has to know where everybody\u2019s at, know really what everybody\u2019s doing. \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n McDaniels admitted last month that he was \u201csmitten\u201d with<\/a> Maye, and the quarterback\u2019s assessment of the offensive coordinator\u2019s style should be music to fans\u2019 ears.
