Sound the alarm, the 49ers\u2019 kicker competition is under way and the team’s star defensive end Nick Bosa<\/a> is on red alert.<\/p>\n

\u201cI actually am paying attention to it, I can\u2019t lie,\u201d Bosa said when asked about the battle. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n

The incumbent, Jake Moody<\/a>, was selected by San Francisco in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He started his career with the 49ers going 21-for-25 on field goals before struggling in 2024 when he went 24-for-34.<\/p>\n

Now, the 25-year-old finds himself competing with six-year veteran and traveling foot, Greg Joseph<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 30-year-old Joseph is a seasoned veteran and has worn six different uniforms in his six NFL seasons \u2013 three last year as he played six games with the New York Giants and one with the Washington Commanders before finishing up his season with the New York Jets.<\/p>\n

In all, Joseph went 16-for-20 on field goals in 2024.<\/p>\n

While Bosa was all eyes on Wednesday, tight end George Kittle<\/a> needed a friendly reminder that there was indeed a competition taking place for the kicking position.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday I wasn\u2019t [paying attention to it], now I will be,\u201d Kittle told reporters. \u201cForgot there was one for a second, thank you, Nick. It\u2019ll be exciting to watch, can\u2019t wait. I love competition, it\u2019s good for the soul.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan<\/a>, he liked what he saw from both the kickers, and that\u2019s going back to the team’s OTAs.<\/p>\n

The team went back-and-forth with Moody and Joseph alternating kicks \u2013 something Shanahan said added to the build-up of the kicking battle.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt all depends on the reps we give them and stuff,\u201d Shanahan said. \u201cBrant [Boyer] decides on that, how he wants to do it so he can do it over the course of time so it\u2019s not just always day-to-day, so we can stack these up and see who has the better camp.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think between the two of them, I think they missed one in OTAs, so they\u2019ve both been kicking real well and it should be a really good battle this camp.\u201d<\/p>\n

The kicker competition sounds like it might be one of the best position battles of training camp for the 49ers.<\/p>\n
