The second day of New Orleans Saints<\/a> training camp is in the books, and Thursday’s session brought the first interception of the summer. Second-year quarterback Spencer Rattler threw it, but you might be surprised to learn it was a new name who caught it.<\/p>\n

Rookie cornerback Quincy Riley came away with the turnover. A fourth-round pick in this year’s NFL draft, Riley was held out of minicamps and OTAs this spring while recovering from a minor injury, but he’s starting camp hot. This is exactly what you want to see from someone who could compete for a starting job across from Kool-Aid McKinstry and Alontae Taylor.<\/p>\n

Rattler took the snap out of the shotgun and rolled to his right, trying a throw to wide receiver Mason Tipton in the back of the end zone. But the receiver never saw the pass coming — it was too high and behind him. Riley read it well and leaped high to snatch it away. Props to the rookie for making the most of that opportunity, but it’s a play both Rattler and Tipton would like back. Check out the video of the play from Fox 8’s Juan Kincaid<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Riley figures to push experienced backups like Isaac Yiadom (signed in free agency), Rico Payton and Rezjohn Wright for that open spot in the starting lineup; the Saints moved on from both Marshon Lattimore and Paulson Adebo in the last calendar year, so their cornerbacks depth chart is changing rapidly. It’ll take more plays than this to help Riley climb that mountain, but he’s off to a good start. He just needs to keep stacking days like this one until the preseason kicks off.<\/p>\n
