OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 Former Ole Miss cornerback Trey Amos is making waves in the NFL, as the Washington Commanders look to solidify their secondary heading into the 2025 season. After a stretch of inconsistent play from their corners in 2024, Washington turned to Amos, drafting him with the 61st overall pick in this year\u2019s NFL Draft\u2014a testament to his talent and potential.<\/p>\n

The Louisiana native spent his college days locking down SEC receivers, showcasing the speed, instincts, and physicality that made him one of the top defensive backs in the conference. Now, the Commanders are counting on those same traits to help turn their defense around.<\/p>\n The Commanders\u2019 Cornerback Shake-Up<\/p>\n Washington\u2019s need at cornerback became clear after moving on from three corners from last year\u2019s roster. Free agent Michael Davis was a disappointment, playing only sparingly late in the season, and remains unsigned at 30 years old. Not being hard on yourself, but just understanding, that\u2019s your job. You gotta do what you have to do.\u201d<\/p>\n Trey Amos<\/p>\n It\u2019s that relentless mentality that made Amos a standout at Ole Miss and a trusted piece in the Rebels\u2019 secondary.<\/p>\n In his lone 2024 Rebel season, Amos started all 13 games, finishing fifth on the team with 50 total tackles (39 solo). He led the team\u2014and was tied nationally\u2014with 13 pass breakups, the most by an Ole Miss defender since 2015, and added three interceptions, a forced fumble, and 3.5 tackles for loss.<\/p>\n His performance earned him First-Team All\u2011SEC honors, while PFF rated him among the top defenders nationally with standout grades in coverage and run defense categories. He logged 16 total passes defended, leading the SEC and tying for third in the nation.<\/p>\n Built for the big stage: Why Washington believes in Amos<\/p>\n While some rookies enter the NFL with more talk than action, Amos is earning attention for all the right reasons. His focus on doing the job, mastering technique, and competing every day aligns perfectly with what the Commanders need.<\/p>\n Washington fans are hopeful that Amos can follow in the footsteps of Mike Sainristil, who became a reliable corner for the team after being drafted in 2024.
