The New York Jets are Justin Fields’ team to start the 2025 NFL<\/a> season. He has looked good in training camp thus far, although he did have a major injury scare. Thankfully, it ended up being a dislocated toe and he was back on the field the next day.<\/p>\n

Fields has had a slow start to his NFL<\/a> career. After being the No. 11 overall pick in the 2021 NFL<\/a> Draft by the Chicago Bears, he has been unable to show consistency.<\/p>\n

He has had flashes of showing off superstar potential. There is no denying the natural athleticism and ability that he possesses. However, he hasn’t shown enough to prove that he can be a franchise quarterback.<\/p>\n

At 26 years old entering the 2025 season, Fields has a chance with the Jets to stick long-term. They gave him a two-year, $40 million contract in NFL<\/a> free agency to replace future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While New York is giving Fields a chance to prove he can be its starting quarterback, could the team consider making a move to bring in more competition?<\/p>\n

Right now, the Jets’ primary backup behind Fields is Tyrod Taylor. He is now 35 years old and is not a viable long-term option. A new idea would see New York trade for a young quarterback who could push Fields.<\/p>\n

Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox has suggested the Jets<\/a> as a possible trade destination for Detroit Lions young quarterback Hendon Hooker.<\/p>\n

“Fields is dealing with a dislocated toe, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, and Hooker’s dual-threat potential would mesh with New York’s QB room,” Knox wrote.<\/p>\n

Hooker was the No. 68 overall pick in the third round of the 2023 NFL<\/a> Draft by the Lions. He has only played in three games so far, completing six of his nine pass attempts for 62 yards.<\/p>\n

Bringing him in for a cheap price would be a smart move for the Jets. Hooker is 27 years old and could bring a good skill-set to the quarterback room. If Fields struggles, New York would have another option to throw on the field.<\/p>\n

Having two quarterbacks who are still young enough to be a long-term fit competing with each other could bring out the best in both of them. It’s the kind of move that a franchise who badly needs a long-term quarterback should try to make.<\/p>\n

There is no guarantee that Detroit will be open to moving Hooker. But, if they are, the Jets would make a lot of sense as a possible suitor.<\/p>\n
