With the first preseason game rapidly approaching, the Minnesota Vikings<\/a> have made a move to shake things up at the bottom of the secondary depth chart a little bit.<\/p>\n

The team has announced that they have signed safety Gervarrius Owens. In order to make room for him on the roster, the Vikings have waived linebacker Max Tooley.<\/p>\n

Owens was a seventh-round pick of the New York Giants<\/a> in the 2023 NFL Draft<\/a> out of Houston. He actually started his college career with the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Golden Norsemen, which might be my new pick for the best team name in college football. That might be slightly biased, though.<\/p>\n

Owens had a pretty solid career at Houston, garnering First-Team All-AAC honors in 2021 and Second-Team honors in 2022. He spent the 2023 season mainly on the Giants\u2019 practice squad, appearing in three games and recording a fumble recovery. He was then waived by the Giants and signed by the Tennessee Titans<\/a>. He appeared in two games for the Titans last season.<\/p>\n

According to Pro Football Reference, Owens has played just one snap on defense in his brief NFL career, with the rest of his appearances coming on special teams.<\/p>\n

Tooley started last season with the Houston Texans<\/a>\u2019 practice squad and was signed to the Vikings\u2019 practice squad in early September. He has yet to appear in an NFL game.<\/p>\n
