The New Orleans Saints are about to crash into the 2025 season with a rookie coach, and a couple of quarterbacks that are essentially rookies. This could be a toxic mix.<\/p>\n
If the New Orleans Saints stay on this course, it could be a rough season for Saints fans all over Louisiana<\/a>. But there’s still time for the team to address their quarterback room, and add a name that could solidify the whole situation.<\/p>\n The Saints Quarterback Competition<\/p>\n Right now, the Saints have two quarterbacks that are essentially rookies. You have Tyler Shough, and actual rookie that the team drafted #40 overall in the second round of the NFL Draft<\/a>. The Louisville product is 25-years-old, making him an unusually old NFL<\/a> rookie. Even though Rattler started 6 games for the Saints last year, he’s younger than the rookie.<\/p>\n This puts the Saints<\/a> in a pretty awkward quarterback scenario, where you have two players who are basically rookies, as your only two options to start the year as your QB1.<\/p>\n Could a\u00a0Veteran QB With A Super Bowl Ring Help The Saints?<\/p>\n Now, if you look out across the landscape of the NFL, there are still a handful of well known veteran quarterbacks that are looking for work. With the first preseason game of the season coming up this month, time is running out for them…and teams.<\/p>\n Former New Orleans Saint Teddy Bridgewater<\/a> is available, but has been on a rocky high school coaching road recently. It doesn’t sound like he’s coming back to play, but he’s technically still out there.<\/p>\n There’s former Louisiana Tech quarterback Jeff Driskel<\/a>, who has started games for the Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions, and Houston Texans over the last 7 seasons. Even though he has a lot of experience in the league, making him the starter might not be ideal.<\/p>\n Former Pro-Bowl quarterback Tyler Huntley is also available, but after trying out for the Bengals recently, he didn’t make the squad. He was beaten out in that competition<\/a> by Desmond Ridder. So his prospects to lead a team might not be great.<\/p>\n There is another name out there, with buzz building as teams start to see injuries during training camp. Its likely his phone will starting ringing, since he was once a favorite for MVP, won the Bert Bell Award (awarded to the NFL Player of the Year by the Maxwell Football Club), and has a Super Bowl ring.<\/p>\n That quarterback is Carson Wentz<\/a>, who started his career as one of the best QBs in the league, before injuries and coaching changes derailed his career.<\/p>\n Philadelphia Eagles v Los Angeles Rams<\/p>\n Photo by Jeff Gross\/Getty Images<\/p>\n Wentz was named to the Pro Bowl his second year in the league. That same season, he was 2nd Team All-Pro, and finished 3rd in MVP voting<\/a>. He went 11-2 as the starter, before a devastating injury ended his season. His backup, Nick Foles, helped lead the Philadelphia Eagles to the Super Bowl championship that season.<\/p>\n He wasn’t able to return for a fully healthy season until two seasons later, and eventually, the coaching staff wanted to move in a different direction, with quarterback Jalen Hurts, which saw Wentz traded to Indianapolis. In all honesty, the Saints would feel much more dangerous with Wentz as the week 1 starter, than either Rattler or Shough.<\/p>\n Where Will Carson Wentz Sign?<\/p>\n With all of that said, the Saints aren’t going to sign Wentz. The seem hellbent on playing this season with Rattler and Shough as their quarterbacks. Almost like they’re trying to tank for a high draft pick in 2026 (looking at you Arch Manning).<\/p>\n So Wentz is likely to end up somewhere else. The New York Jets may suddenly be in the market for a starter. The Tennessee Titans now need a quarterback, and the Pittsburgh Steelers might want to add a warm body<\/a> to the depth chart behind Aaron Rodgers.<\/p>\n
