Donald Trump is so keen for the Washington Commanders<\/a> to revert to their old nickname that he “forgot” their current one.<\/p>\n

During a press conference this week, where he signed an executive order reestablishing the Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, Trump<\/a> made his views known. Among the guests were LIV Golf’s Bryson DeChambeau<\/a>, Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker, WWE legend Triple H, and Giants Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor.<\/p>\n

In between advocating for the return of the Presidential Fitness Test and mispronouncing Dolphins star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s name, Trump turned his attention to his favorite pastime – trying to rename sports teams against their wishes. “If they bring back the name, you’ll have a lot of excitement,” Trump told reporters.<\/p>\n

“What are they, Commanders or something? Is it Commanders? It’s not a good name.” This “forgetful” moment occurred just 10 days after Trump publicly threatened the same team, saying he would block their proposed $4 billion stadium plan unless they reverted to the Washington Redskins.<\/p>\n

The derogatory name was dropped in 2020 after years of protest and corporate pressure.<\/p>\n

“The Washington Redskins, it’s a fabled franchise,” Trump continued. “And now I don’t even know what the hell their last name is.”<\/p>\n

Trump also expressed confusion over why the Cleveland Guardians’ former nickname, “Indian”, might be considered offensive.<\/p>\n

“You know who’s upset about it? The Indians are upset about it,” he said. “They’re upset about Redskins, too. I guess you’d say it was a little bit less of a case, but people want to see the Redskins, and the Indians back,” he said. “I recommend it.”<\/p>\n

The Commanders franchise was originally established as the Redskins in 1937 after relocating from Boston (1932-1936). In 2020, the team adopted the temporary name Washington Football Team in response to demands for change from Native American groups and corporate sponsors.<\/p>\n

Major corporations like Nike, FedEx, and PepsiCo played a crucial role by refusing to endorse merchandise with the old name, prompting the organization to rebrand during a significant period of racial justice. The franchise officially became the Commanders in 2022.<\/p>\n

The Navajo Nation hailed this change as a “historic day for all Indigenous peoples around the world,” marking a positive stride towards respecting diverse cultures and communities. Now, Trump wants to undo all that progress.<\/p>\n

“My statement on the Washington Redskins has totally blown up, but only in a very positive way,” Trump penned.<\/p>\n
